External Measures

  • Identity checks by third-party authentication and verification companies
  • Alibaba.com cooperates with pre-eminent authentication and verification (A&V) companies, such as VeriSign, Inc., Asian Company Profiles Ltd. (ACP), Hangzhou Zhongde Information and Technology Services Co. Ltd. and China Credit Information Service (P.R.C.) Ltd. These A&V companies will conduct identity checks on paying members, including company registration details, to validate that it is an officially registered enterprise. It is important for buyers to conduct independent due diligence of prospective suppliers in addition to our authentication and verification process before engaging in any transactions. A&V services will not, for instance, verify the financial status, credit history or trading practices of our supplier members.
  • Launch of escrow service to reduce transaction risk
  • Alibaba.com has teamed up with Alipay, the largest third-party payment platform in China, to provide an escrow-based payment solution that makes online transactions safe and convenient. Escrow service providers act as third-party referees, holding payment from a buyer for the supplier until delivery of the goods has been confirmed. Escrow service providers also notify suppliers when payment has been made so they know it is safe to ship the buyers order. Through AliExpress Beta 1.0, our users can now pay securely and conveniently, either using credit card or Alipay.
  • Arbitration services
  • Whenever a dispute occurs, it can be challenging for buyers to retrieve their funds or for suppliers to get their goods returned. As such, Alibaba.com has introduced arbitration services provided by the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission South China Sub-Commission (CIETAC South China). CIETAC South China has a solid reputation for its impartiality and professionalism as arbitrators offering settlements that have are enforceable internationally.

  • Global anti-spam and anti-fraud system to detect and suspend accounts of suspicious users
  • The size of our international marketplace has grown rapidly to exceed nine million registered users as of the end of the second quarter in 2009. Despite this accelerated pace of growth, only a miniscule percentage of registered users were involved in unfair practices. To ensure the safety and security of our online community, Alibaba.com employs an advanced anti-spam and anti-fraud system to detect and suspend accounts with suspicious activity from the site.
  • Introduction of a trade dispute resolution team
  • To promote a safe trading environment, Alibaba.com has formed a trade dispute resolution team to help resolve trade disputes between users on our marketplace. However, since Alibaba.com is typically not involved in the actual transaction between users of our marketplace, the team can only facilitate the dispute resolution process. The team will do its best to encourage constructive communication between users and it is ultimately up to the parties involved to reach a settlement to the dispute.
  • Online and offline education channels, and promotion of information-sharing between users
