What are the hidden costs with both? Is it really less expensive to deal with a factory, or are there advantages to dealing through an agent?

90% from all factories in China sell his items over agents. When you connect the factory may you think you connect directly with the factory but in more then 90% you deal with a agent.

The other topic and should to mention is that china peoples habit is. When a foreigner order a item or a Chinese order the same item, for foreigner is it usually more expensive. I am German and stay now more then 4 years in china and I know what going on here.

But I big topic is from where want this factory people or a Chinese agent know what is necessary when he ship the goods to over-sea. Much time we find the experience Chinese factory or agent send the goods without or wrong documents. The surprise and the trouble you find at least with the duty in you country!

I am German in china and never more let a Chinese factory or agent send our good. After much terrible experience I do it now by my self.

Replying to [Renderview]:yes, that's right! At present, many factoires has no previlege for import&export, all these done are just through an agent. Indeed, in china, the facoties like these can give a better price and good quality. so dealing with agent, in some way,you can get a better price
