Try DHgate.com as an alternative source . Many of their wholesalers give good prices and free shipping.

I am wanting to import around 2000kg of fitness equipment (weights) from China to Calgary (Canada). The supplier quoted me a CIF rate of $2600US.

I figure everything would take about 1-2CBM of space. Is this a good price? Can I get a cheaper price by using a freight forwarder? At that rate, there is no point importing as it eats into most of the profit.

If you are importing into the UK then I would recommend you buy on an FOB basis and arrange shipping using UK Forwarder. Where shipping to door is included in the buying price you will be paying over the odds and its often a misconception that this is 'easier' as long as you understand the basics.
