For me, it is not something I tend to worry about. There are several reasons a legitimate company may use hotmail or yahoo such as:-
1. Larger capacity compared to a company based email address (This can make a difference if you constantly receive/send large files) For example, my email can accept files of 5mb, but hotmail is more.
2. Quality of performance may be better than offered by the company email address,
3. Easier to access if not always in the office
Just to name a few reasons why it may not necessarily be a problem.
Having said that, a company email address is often cited as one way to assist in verifyting that a company is legitimate. If you don't have this option, then I would still be looking for some other way to replace this as a method of verification.
