Is there any merit in forming buying groups ( a group of importers who by small quantities of goods of the same/different goods and ship them together) to combat the limitations of MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)?

Beagle,

There is merit in forming buying groups.  However, there are a ton of things to consider.  Unless you buy with a group of people who you know, trust, and are local it can become tough.  If your group is spread throughout North America who receives the shipment, do they then repackage for everybody else, do you allow them a greater discount for doing so, can you absorb the extra shipping costs once the item is imported, do you all have different markets or will you all offer the same item on the internet thus creating competition amongst yourselves?

I tried this a long time ago, really before the internet was a major factor, one solution we came up with was that one person kept all of the merchandise, from there they dropped shipped from their warehouse for those of us that were selling through mail order.  At that time we were even going to have a person on the east coast and one person on the west coast.  That was 20 years ago, people "seemed" more trustworthy back then.

That is a good idea Beagle. However, I agree with Sensa that it is much better off if the group is formed locally. If 2 buyers are from US and 2 buyers are from CAN, it can be a mess! I would like to form a group in Vancouver, Canada. Which part of Canada are you from Beagle?

This is a great idea.  I ran into some real bad vendors and would like to share with everybody.

Souds good, but just like Sensa said that it's difficult to do in actual.

The best idea is together the buyer which in the same industry and local in the near place.

Such a group already exists! I don't agree about the local issue though...you are creating competition if people in the same market are buying from the same place.....how can you get a competitive edge when the group buyers compete with each other.

The logistics are not difficult at all, and are definitely not messy!

why not visit this group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WholesaleBuyers

They only allow one member from each country, so i can't guarantee that you'll get membership! you have to be an auction site or small online retailer/ flea market seller  to get membership! I am sure you will change your opinions as expressed above when you see what they are doing!

I forgot to mention, membership is free and nobody on the group is selling anything to the other group members!

I would be interested.  I am new to business as a sole trader, so at the moment it will be in a small capacity.
