The information on T/T from my bank states that "all receiving banks" charge the recipient (i.e. supplier) a fee for receiving the t/t (wire transfer) via SWIFT.  Is this true?  Is it usual for the supplier to absorb this cost - I assume I am not expected to add it onto the amount I send for payment (I don't even know how much it would be).  Note: I am not talking about the fee for sending the wire transfer.

Thanks.

Every bank that handles the remittance is going to charge its own fee. The remitter may pay the remitting bank's charges, but may not know how much the beneficiary's bank may charge.

If the remitter wishes to pay for the charges of the beneficiary's bank as well, he can instruct the remitting bank to recover all bank's charges from only the remitter. However, in most cases, the beneficiary is left to pay charges at his end of the transactions.

Short answer is YES. In the USA bank fees on the Buyer/sender side are between 25$USD and 45$USD; on the supplier/receiver side the bank fee is approximately the same or even less. At times the supplier will add (in advance) the fee to your order to offset their loss (especially on samples) Example [cost of goods+shipping+bank fee] on the Proforma invoice. This is completely normal and not unusual. However, that being said, not all suppliers will charge this fee to you. You can probably negotiate the fee out of the invoice but not on samples, they would lose money.

Hope this helps.
