How can i ship goods from China without paying such a stupid price? Please help!!

I am very new to the whole importing business - i run a small business in the UK and would like to purchase some goods from China, which vary from ribbons to wicker baskets, all craft and gift goods for my gift basket business/
The question i have is how on earth can i ship these goods without having to pay such ridiculous high amounts for shipping? I have been quoted anything between $3500 - $15,000 to ship from China to the UK. This isn't even for a large order. It seems i either have to order in 1000's to cut shipping costs, otherwise i can place small order yet be expected to pay 4+ figures. I seem to be going round in circles here. I have looked into sharing a container but have had no joy.
I'm beginning to lose hope and i may have to rethink my whole plan as to where i am to source goods (*sobs). I hope that someone out there can shed some light and help a young yet budding businesswoman as myself.

if you are purchasing those goods from china. you can asking some shipping agent to combine them in a full container. it can be save the freight for u.
also I think that you can asking shipping agent to quote u the price which they can handling those goods to loading in a full container. don't ship them by air . because it's too expensive. you can asking them to quote u the fast vessel sea freight price.
meantime,you can asking your supplier to quote u delivery the goods to the shipping agent warehouse . including the export documents.
those small points can save many charges for u.
