Dear Forum,
I am considering starting a business importing goods from China. It will involve the bulk transit of goods from China to the Los Angeles port. I am complete newby in this endeavor and so I want to ask the following questions:
1. If you are shipping goods in bulk is it more advisable to use seafreight than airfreight..how do the costs stack up?
2. Has anyone had any experience shipping large quantities of small delicate goods from the Chinese mainland to the west coast of US? What company/companies did you use?
3. Am I better trying to use separate companies to move the goods from the Chinese factory to the chinese port and then a separate company to ship the goods to the US and finally a separate company to move the goods to my storage?
The business I am considering starting depends upon low operating costs per unit. If transport costs are prohibitive I may have to go back to the drawing board.
I know these are newby questions so I do appreciate anyone who takes the time to point me in the right direction.
Kind regards,
Paul.
Hi Paul,
If you have already identified the products you wish to import, then you will need to work out your landed cost in Los
Angeles. Since you are a newbie, then it might be better to get a CIF L.A. cost from your supplier. Sea freight will be
cheaper than Air freight for goods shipped in bulk.
Alternatively, you could contact an import/customs broker in your city to see if they can assist you with your import. They will
normally be able to clear goods for you and deliver them to your warehouse/premises. They will charge you a
fee but it may be worth it until you get the hang of things.
As you gain experience and knowledge in this field, you will reach a stage where you can buy FOB and work out
your own freight costs using your forwarder or shipping company (you will need the measurements/dimensions/
weight of your cargo first).
Hope this helps. Good luck!
Sam
