it is frequently,you can talk answer him/her indirectly.Such as, for age,you can tell him/her "it is top secret for famale";for marriage,you can say"my live is very nice".
customer is our another boss,we have to deal with them sometimes,for a good saler,you have to do it,not for them,but you.

I also cant bear such questions , so rude , why  they always like to ask such questions .

i have got these problems. And because i am single girl, so i just tell them i am single, and please see my products, catalogue and welcome.

divert your attention to the product and business

Just tell the Guys you married and have children, if after this you find they have no interest in your company or product then you have saved yourself a lot of time and energy conversing with a guy who was not going to buy any way .... if after he is still interested in your product them you know you have a good sales lead.

I'm agree with Winsonjoe,i think we have to answer these questions,because it is a way to know you!May be he or she will trade with you when you answer them!
Another reason is the custom!like we Chinese we all like talking about our families,our age,marriage or others!

In UK sales girls would be asked things like this, and if the girl is very pretty i am sure much more interest, but you have to learn how to deal with clients, at the end of the day you are 1000s of miles away from them and as long as the words are not too cheaky you can have a normal chat  without being too personal.

Some things work both ways, some sales girls might want to show a picture of them which is not real, show a very pretty girl, but they might not have the looks, but this would get them more people chating and leads to business, this is not bad!! as in sales we have to understand the market, the products,the clients, how to speak to them, and your image is paramount.

You have to feel ok to communicate like this, but i feel this is all in the sales game, but you have a level where you are happy with their comments and know when they go too far, and you have to know how to turn it around without the loss of the clients business!!

If i person that keeps in contact with you has no interest to make orders so there is no point to keep talking to them? and if the person makes an order you have to work with them or pass them to another sale person if you can not cope.

some customer from different country is very friendly and humourous, i like to talk with them just like a friend. yes, i told him i 've married for many years, and my child is very lovely.  and my customers they are happy to show me the pictures of their family..

you can make businees just like to be a human.
