What is the name of the supplier, what products are you trying to buy. I deal with few suppliers in Japan and it is true that tt is the only method that they accept. TT payment is quite normal if you are dealing with a legit company. Many companies only accept TT (Company only not personal account), nothing else not even L/C (waste of bank charges even though it is save) or escrow or paypal or western union.

delaynomore,
FMCG. but is it normal for them to accept only 100% T/T for 1st time transaction? everything is to their advantage. .if they do not send the goods to me, what can I do? i do not mind paying them 100% if there is some form of security whereby, i know the goods will reach me eventually.
have u used alipay to pay yr suppliers frm japan? if yes, how does it work?
can kindly recommand any alternative to me?

I have not used alipay before , its like escrow i think. Doubt if the supplier will accept also. Many legimate suppliers only accept T/T and nothing else.
Let me guess , you are buying Japanese Baby milk powder or cosmetics? and shipment will be by sea?
I am also buying these kind of items from Japan and it will be difficult to help you if you dont provide the name of the supplier to check for you if they are legit or not

1.Ask the copy of the business cert from the company or you can ask the help from the alibaba, they have many mans in japan and they know japan well.
2.When in shipment,it is better for you to choose the DHL,UPS,Fed-Exp,TNT,htough it costs more.In fact, you will save most at the whole viewpoint.

Dear folk
It has become a norm for all companies to put their payment terms to Prepayment or Advanced payment nowadays.
This is practiced in Europe, India and China, except for India, they are willing to accept Letter of Credit from certain banks and the rest only take L.C. for large transactions of US$10K and above. US companies can accept Credit Card payments, and cleared by merchant's bank before shipping.
You made your complaints over a practice by a company even before you started transactions, and if you name the firm, you are liable for defamation, even though something you wrote may be true to you, but the onus is on you to prove what you said is truth, because you place your own opinion into your statement.
We have been working with a German firm, who has been around for over a hundred years. All terms of payment is always "pre-payment" by t.t. to their account. We have seen them, visited their exhibition stand in Hamburg, and been with them for two years, and the condition is not changed.
Put yourself into the shoes of the supplier, and you can understand their apprehensions, due to their past experiences of the many fraud buyers that cheated them of their products, and not pay.
To lessen your risk, you can investigate into the firm, do you Business Intelligence, ask for References and check them out. If not, don't deal with them, go to another supplier, if you can find alternatives who can meet to your terms of payment, or you can purchase from their distributors in your home country.

There is nothing wrong with an advance payment in itself, provided the supplier exists and is able to supply the products you want. First transactions are normally done with advance payment.
To verify a Japanese company, contact the JETRO (Japanese government trade agency) office in your country (jetro.go.jp). Japan is a very transparent economy so it will be easy to find out about existing companies.
