On an order of 20 cartons (each 20x20x30cms) is it more cost effective to have them shipped or should I be looking at air freight? (China to Spain)

Why not ask your Supplier to give you a price for both Sea freight and Air Freightr?
I'm sure they will be able to tell you.

Ask your supplier to give you an idea for the courier cost as well. As either sea freight or air freight, you still have to pay local charges (from sea or air port to your office or warehouse). And since your total volume is not much, you probably need to pay these charges by minimum. On the other hand, courier is all included.

Here in Hong Kong, we usually get better deal from couriers (15~30% off, could be more). Check with your supplier, they may have good deal with their courier as well.

Hola, as per my experiences, express services would be most cost effective for you. air freight, door to door.

Thank you for your kind replies.

We have imported a container into Spain before and have had to employ a customs agent to handle customs paperwork, & clearance for us, am I right in thinking that if we use a courier for this smaller shipment, we would not need to worry about customs? Are all customs payments etc included in the courier price?

No, unless the shipper agreed to pay for the import tax for you. Otherwise, you still need to pay for it.

Different courier have different practise on the custom declaration paper work. They may do it for you for free. When you have the freight quoted from your supplier, make sure you know which courier service is quoted. And call them at your side to check what they can do for you.
