Every kinds of business has his risk

For the retail business,  like supermarket, maybe they don't need to take the risk of selling goods, but the rist of house rent and management cost

Please be careful with international wholesalers. I made a donation to a Chinese company (Elec-technology) and never received the shipment. I would advise to ask for references as this company could not provide. I made a bad decision on going through with the order anyway. The prices were too good to be true.

I think any business is running rusk. First you should find a reliable supplier with a suitable prices and quality. The real suppliers will tell you why the product worthes the price, and they will offer you some suggestions not just for selling the goods to you.
And then you should have a large and good channel of distribution.
Last thing you should be polite and trustable to your clients.

You can't buy products, you can't pay for transportation, you can't pay fees, customs clearance, rent, etc... if you don't have cash.

Or HOW are you going to buy, to collect 1,000 ton of something or a 1,000 IPods, for example?

So, go to a bank, ask for a huge credit for the beginning.
