Tainted Milk Powder in China
A fourth baby died today due to tainted milk powder produced in China. The milk powder is tainted with melamine, which is used to artificially increase the protein content. China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) has reportedly dispatched over 5000 inspectors to hundreds of factories producing powdered milk to monitor and report on production. The fact that the story is being widely reported by the media here in China, and the attention it is getting from the government and the public is not only a testament to the growing freedom of the media, but also in part to an increased sense of manufacturer responsibility. This increased sense of manufacturer responsibility stems in most part from toxic and unsafe Chinese exports recently discovered in international markets, and the media spotlight that followed. I think we will continue to see an increased interest in unsafe product and manufacturing for products distributed right here in China, with a more active response by the government.
