How to Prevent Your Products Being copied?
Post 1 of 8
A friend of mine produces small technical products in Germany. He now has an enquiry about some of his products from a Chinese company. Understandably this company asks for samples. Now my friend is afraid that the Chinese company will not order but copy his products upon the samples and sell them, which of course could spoil his business. Apart from patents, is there any good/easy way to protect his product?
Looking forward to your advice, many thanks!

It is well-known that Chinese is strong in copying. There is no method to prevent if your product is easy to be copied & you want to sell to China.

Do not think registration can help, Chinese can still modify your design, change little bit to avoid against registration.

Anyway, sequence your marketing schedule & put China at the last station

Yes right.
the most you can do is registeration of that product. but chines are specialized in copy the item, Even main companies items are copying at this time in many and most factories like Nokia mobile phones,
So its very hard to maintain this.
If you are in Germany then you can registered brand name and item in your own country and make your brand name as strong as no other brand vcan distrube you. !!

Replying to [PaniniVerlag]:I think it's really very hard to avoid such situation if you want to export your products to China. The best way should be getting your products patented, and trying your best to perfect them.
They can copy your design, but they can't copy your good quality.

in reality someday somehow the people who may be interested only to copy your product will eventually get hold of the sample/product in the open market, and the product can then be taken apart, reversed engineered and copied. there's no way to stop that in the real cruel world.

the best thing to do now is to have it patented, and name branded. a process/technology can be registered/patented, but i'd strongly go for branding too. copycats can reproduce fakes, but a brand is something that cannot be copied as easily.

have the product patented, and most importantly create a brand name for it. get legal advise to register the brand.

in asia now there're lots of cheap fakes, but everytime i buy i still go for the brand and dont mind paying premium because i know quality stands behind the brands. not so with fakes, they're cheap mostly but of inferior quality and unreliable.

it still pays to insist on quality.

To be honest,as i met this question,i have no good way to help your friend.I wonder if that items including a high core technology.
In fact,if you are afraid of Chinese people copy the items, not only apply for the patent but also control core technology. If you really want to sell this items to China,or really want to earn much money from China, i think that is not necessary to worry your products be copied.
The best you can do is that you don't sell this products to China if you are afraid of this thing.

Good luck for you!

Replying to [PaniniVerlag]: SIr, it is really difficult to deal with the possibility.
i have an good idea for you to protect the patent is that: you could put it under your bed secretly, never tell anyone.
it is a jok.
in fact, we have same problem. we are a professional manufacturer of mouse pad and USB hub, and one model have the patent in the appearence. but when i surfer the alibaba.com, input USB HUB,I FOUND MANY OF that model are showed.

I think every product will be copied while it is showing in market in any country, not only in China!

If you have good innovation and technology, what will you be afraid?
