As one of the first group of youths who successfully took in China's first college entrance examination in the reform era (in 1977), Ed Zhang was enrolled as an English language major from re-education camp.

As a journalist, Ed has been keen on strategic issues in the Chinese reform, and has interviewed many leading policy-makers and scholars, including Justin Yifu Lin, Bob Mundell, Harry Harding, Dwight Perkins and Martin Wolf.

As a writer on management and social issues, he has published in China Daily (under the pen name of You Nuo) and also in Chinese-language journals such as the World Economic Herald, Reform, Peking University Business Review, 21st-Century Business Review, Successful Marketing, Strategy and Management, etd.

As a businessman, he has been invited, on a regular basis, by international organizations, corporations, and non-governmental organizations to speak on issues in China, including Piper Jaffray, Companies, Environmental Defense Fund, Asia Development Bank, etc.

Background:
In 1982, he became editorial writer for the then newly launched English-language newspaper China Daily.

Between 1984 and 1985, as one of the first graduate students from China to study political science and management in the US, he obtained his MA in Political Science in University of Hawaii (Manoa).

From 1992 to 1993, he was independent consultant to a number of investment services in New York as the first batch of Chinese companies began to issue shares and ADRs to the overseas investors, while he was recruited in the PhD program of Political Science in New School of Social Research.

Between 1994 and 1996, he worked for various media in Hong Kong, mainly as a China business columnist.

Between 1997 and 2000, he took a number of jobs in Hong Kong's financial service, ranging from Investor Relations Consultant, Investment Analyst, China Direct Investment Director, and successfully completed seven merge and acqusition deals between overseas investors and Chinese software companies.

Between 2001 and 2002, he served as Senior Vice President for a US-based Internet company in Beijing.
