Who can define the three words: light, lamp and bulb?
Post 1 of 6

We are a manufacturer of LED lighting products.

I use the word light to promote products usually.

However, I want to make it sure, am i right or not?

Could you please give an exact defination for light, lamp and bulb?

Can we use them freely?  Is it correct to say: street light or street lamp?

It is kind of you to give suggestions.

In the context of your question, I would say that most of the times there isn't much difference between lamp and light. If they have the same lighting device in their house, people would call it a lamp. If they use it to illuminate a street, parking lot, etc., they call it a light. So in this case it's a somewhat "colder" expression for an "industrial" use.

"Bulb" is really an old fashioned word and not used very much anymore. It should be called "lamp" instead, but as you can see above, this word also has another use.

To avoid confusions, I personally wouldn't use the word bulb at all. That would be a lamp for me, though it won't hurt combining it with something else, like saying, "LED lamp" or "incandescant lamp".

And when it comes to the complete lighting assembly, it would always be a light, but specifically a light for a given purpose (illuminating your home, the street, etc.). That would sound professional enough without confusing the client.

By the way, if you are selling LEDs, I would like to receive a message (via Trade Manager) from you.

While the above answer is correct, I would like to add the following, taken from Wikipedia and also information from General Electric (GE) probably the foremost experts in the field.

A lightbulb (or light bulb, light globe, electric lamp,  or bulb ) is a device that produces light from electricity when it is turned on.

A lamp is a device that is used to produce light or heat and contains a bulb designed for the application of the lamp. The lamp is used to contain and control the bulb.

With that said, lamp and bulb are used to mean bulb, and as stated above, bulb is not  used as much.

To put it this way, the international (metric) system has been legal in the US for many years now, but for emotional reasons people cling on to the outdated, awkward and obsolete British system. And that is basically also what still makes them use words like "bulb". Sources like GE etc. are no authorities in this regard.
