how to start a talk with a strange trader?
Post 1 of 96

As a green hand in the line of exporting,I find that I have such a long way to go.

After a long time search ,I added many traders into my Trademanger, but I seldom see they are online.Sometime I meet one or two of them online, then I greet to them wish to talk with them.

Their response disappointe me a lot. Some don't response and some after few words offline.

So,would you please share you view with me,and help me out of the difficulty.

i met this problem too .most of time ,when the customer need to know the quotation and specific information, they seem urgent. but after you send the information they need and talked with them ,they become indifferent and seem have no time to talk with you or respond to you less and never focus on the product again.

Well, Trade Manager (and MSN and Skype) are very useful in exchanging information quickly and conveniently. However none of these is a serious platform for making business! So please do not expect anybody making several thousand USD business decisions based on a TM talk! You have your classic and well proven sales tools - pick up the phone, send an e-mail or a fax, or, god save me, write a letter. TM is very good but it is a pool with many contacts and if you have hundreds of contacts you don't even know who you are talking to.

Let me give all of you exporters some advice here. I am a buyer in London so I have experienced this type of contact from China companies like yourselves and quite frankly most of the time it is irritating and frustrating (and usually at a time when something else takes priority).

Trade Manager is a great tool but remember something...your call to me is just one  that day, but another 15 -20+ other people have also used TM  to unexpectedly call me, many I don't know and many from previous business asking "how are you" etc etc. I could spend all day on Trade Manager just being polite!! That is why you do not get responses from buyers!! TM is too easy for the seller.

Yes for quick action and responses at the beginning of a negotiation to seek clarification TM is popular, but after this stage your best way to communicate is with email or occassional phone call (which impresses me). If there is a genuine interest then you will get a response from buyers like me but otherwise no sense to irritate the buyer!!

Persistence will not achieve results when done in the wrong way. As a buyer of many products from China, I prefer to receive emails and a follow-up phone call sometimes.

You would be surprised how a phone call makes such good impression.
