what sort of volume are you looking to import? Sydney would be easier as you can consolidate your shipment with other importers into one container.
So this is how you basically go about it.
a, find a supplier in China. For big volume, a few thousand piecs, go with a factory.
b. for smaller volume, go with a trading company
c. hire an inspect agent in China to find you suppliers, handle the negotiation, inspection etc etc for you. Its not worth the headache to do it yourself, if you don't speak the language and you are miles away
d. check with customs how much import tax you have to pay.
e. When all is good, you place the order, inspection agent will check the goods to make sure less defects go into the shipment, you cannot eliminate all defects. A shipping agent will handle the movement of goods. ie from factory into the container into the boat. Your inspection agent can find you a forwarder
f. The boat arrives. You hire a customs broker in this end to handle the paper work for you, pay the taxes and collect the goods from the wharf or the custom brokers warehouse.
