Importing electronics from China to USA, high risk?
Post 1 of 26
Hello there. I am a 22 year old college student who has activly paid his bills the past 4 years by importing mp4 clones and bluetooth headsets from China to USA to resell on line and locally.
I took a little break last semester and heard customs was difficult to get past now.
Im importing from Schenzhen to USA. My past orders have been 300-500 psc totaling 8,000.
My supplier in China tells me If I make orders below 100, I should have no problem with customs.
Can anyone tell me
1) The risk on large orders of being never delivered or held up
2) If there is any risk and how much less for small orders.
3) Any other relevant new customs information regarding importation of electronic bluetooth ear pieces.
Thanks so much.
Dustin

Replying to [Dustin Adam Jones]: If what you do is within the law and is with genuine suppliers, there is no risk. The only risk is if you are importing illegal merchandise or if you are dealing with an unreliable suplier.

I ordered 20 psc to see if it would get by. They used to come NO PROBLEM even in the thousands but this 20 psc is being held by customs because it has fake items.
My question now is, are their brokers that you can hire to try and clear it out for you? Or will they return the package?

Quoting from [Dustin Adam Jones]:
There is a crackdown by customs... The stuff you are importing has TRADEMARK technology in it that these manufacturers have no license to be using... hence customs are seizing shipments of these "clones" as you so prettily put it... What you are actually doing is importing STOLEN US technology that is costing US comanies money in legal sales of proprietary technology which means they make the retail price more expensive to make up for people like you who are dealing in this stuff.....
Kiss your money goodbye....... Try dealing in LEGAL products maybe?

Thanks for the Info. I was told they were real and that their Trading company was only in China and that they would arrive no problem. Only after talking on the phone and demanding the truth from supplier did I get a real answer.
Is there anyway to get the package sent back so that they can refund me? My worker in China tells me I have a good chance.

I doubt very much that US Customs would return the package to China for you.
Once Customs confiscate something, they will destroy the items usually.
As Foow said, I think you have lost your money and your goods.

The normal procedure with fake items is, when they are identified as such, they are seized and destroyed. If you are very lucky the authorities will not take the matter further than this but it is possible that you could also be prosecuted. My advice would be not to contact the customs authorities and wait to see if they contact you. There is absolutely no chance that they will return fake items or that they will help you to get a refund.
For future trading, you need to be aware that most of the items supplied from China that carry a popular brand name will be fakes but many of the Chinese suppliers will claim that their products are licensed in one way or another. A few suppliers will openly admit that the products are replicas, clones, imitations or similar. Whatever the suppliers say is irrelevant and anyone dealing in illegal merchandise risks prosecution.

If qty is large, let say 1000pcs, your supplier should help you divide them in to few boxes, may be 200pcs each. if they say 100pcs is secure, why they dont help pack 100pcs in one box if your order is over 100pcs? they should not have such excuse.
it is quite difficult to pass the customs because many imitation products come from China, if your supplier provide enough info or documents to the customs, then it should be easy to go through.

Dear Adam, I think that you live in a country where people have no problem to spend money in good products. In my country you can sell everithing even with no responsability about warranty,so you can sell trash products, BECAUSE people is looking for trash. It´s is a poor market. I wish I could sell in US!!. Look for good quality goods, at the end of all is better.
