Inside the Russian Embassy in London a KGB colonel puffed a cigarette as he read the handwritten note for the third time. There was no need for the writer to express regret, he though. Correcting this problem would be easy. He would do that in a moment. The thought of it caused a grim smile to appear and joy to his heart. But he pushed away those thoughts and turned his attention to a framed photograph on his desk. His wife was beautiful, he told himself as he remembered the day they were married. That was forty-three years ago, and it had been the proudest and happiest day of his life.
What had happened to all that time? Why had it passed so quickly, and why hadnt he spent more of it with her? Why hadnt he held her close and told her more often that he loved her? He cursed himself as a tear came from the corner of his eye, ran down his cheek, then dropped onto the note. He stiffened and wiped his face with the back of his hand. There was no need for remorse or regret, he told himself. In a few moments he would join her and at that time would express his undying love and devotion.
After setting the note ablaze he dropped it into an ashtray and watched it burn. For a time the names cast moving shadows on the walls of the darkened room, then they nickered and died out. The colonel dropped the cigarette to the floor and ground it out with his heel, then clutched the photograph to his breast, removed a pistol from his pocket, placed the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger. In the ashtray a small portion of the note remained. Where it had been wetted by his tear it had failed to bum, and on that scrap of paper were the words "died yesterday."

Replying to [ big sea]:Me too, I don't know why can't he send her an SMS to her mobile phone the day before yesterday.
Married for 45 years, could be about 21 plus when they were married, and now he could be at 66 years old. Could his flame of love still burns strongly for her after her menopause? He is in London KGB office and she must be in Russia.
Just one of those stories or a real life experience?

"In a few moments he would join her and at that time would express his undying love and devotion. "
I think that his wife is dead already.

I worked with both the CIA, the KGB and many other agencies. It seems unusual for the colonel to spill his brains in the office of the KGB in London, because of the media publicity, police investigations and the exposure of a spy agency office in London!
The story is a fairy tale, more towards a fantasy of Romeo and Juliet in a cloak-and-dagger setting. The last two words "died yesterday" tells us a bit about why he shot himself to commit suicide, much relative evidences telling about a photograph of the married couple, and so on. However it puzzles me to the reason for colonel (Boris) to burn the note. Why should he burn away the very evidence and motive for self destruction, and bring about the Police investigations and suspicions about the cause of his death

Replying to [HelenJollee]:Dear Helen
What a sad ending for a husband who was weak to handle the poor dedication given to his wife. It comes to a point that the happiest moment of his life with her was reduced to a single day, the day they got married. Look like right after the wedding, the Colonel went to work for KGB all over the world.
Now the mistery is about the note, what was in it?, here is my take.
If the note he wrote was about himself, it should have said "...died today". But it wasn't, so to me, he was writing a note about his wife as he was watching the picture of her he had it on the desk. Remembering the day they got married, and then getting emotional as he realized how he forgot about her, all his time dedicated to work, he felt so sad writing about her and how he could not recall telling his wife, how much he loved her. So the note was about his wife, and he has learned that she died yesterday. That was so shocking, because he had on his mind that one of these days he would tell his wife about his love for her. But when he learned that she is dead already, his dreams of telling her about his feelings collapsed. He had no choice but go after her the folowing day.
