A name can tell a thousand lies: A quick way of telling an Indonesian company is real or not
Post 1 of 6

Hello all,

I've been busy these days. But still, I miss writing in this forum.

I wished I could share all my knowledge to all of you of how to tell a company is a real one or not - esspecially if the company from Indonesia. Unfortunately, there some knowledge that I could put into words and explain to you about it, but there are some other are just very hard to put into words.

Here is an example of the one that is actually hard to put into words. But let me try my best.

As the title of this article suggests, this article is talking about name. During my spare time, I usually do random surving, try to read details of Indonesian companies listed in Alibaba. One thing that I found interesting was the names that these companies representative's use. The followings are my findings.

1. Use western name instead of Indonesian.

In the real world, it is very unusual for Indonesian to use western names. Yes, some people use western name for their own name, but at least not for the family name. Let say for example the name

JAMES BROWN

Many Indonesian use James for their own name, but not Brown for their family name. For your information, in Indonesia, there are places in which people maintain their family name from their great great grand parents, down to their great great grand children. Places like Sumatra, North Sulawesi, Ambon, are esspecially well known for maintaining their family names. Just knowing the family names, we can easily tell that a person comes from certain place in Indonesia.

On the other hand, many other places do not really maintain the sacred family name from their great great grand parents. Instead, a child will only be given a family name using the father's given name.

So, when you find an Indonesian seller with complete western name, you better start to watch out.

2. Use a wrong Indonesian name or completely foolish name.

There was an Indonesian paper scammer use the name BACO. I almost fall down from my chair laughing when I see this name. The name BACO is a boy's name originated from South Sulawesi area where I come from. This name has a down image in which people usually look down on people named with BACO. It was obvious that this scammer must came from my area even though he resides not in my area.

It is obvious that no serious business people will use this name, esspecially in formal situation. Unfortunately, foreigner can not tell. Still, I write about this just in case you have depth knowledge about Indonesia and you are able to tell.

3. Use names that do not make sense at all.

There are also some cases in which the scammes use a name that does not make sense at all. This is the hardest part to tell, because in this open and borderless media, people can be doing business anywhere at any time.

I was confused to see some Indonesian seller use a complete Chinese name to offer products in Alibaba. Is it wrong? No, it's not. But if I am in position to buy from an indonesian seller, I would care so much on small details. Esspecially when it involves big money.

A real and good business person, or a seller, or even a buyer, would open his/her business identity as open as possible. This is part of gaining credibility. An easily verified and clean seller will in no time gain more and more sales due to his/her good name that sells around.

Is there any better way of finding real supplier or seller?

Again and again this is a golden question. I have written many answers to this question. But let me give you another experint of mine that I hope you can gain some lesson from it.

Just recently, I need a carton box manufacturer for my current product. Off course, as many of you would do, I need cheapest but reliable offer from reliable manufacturer.

What did I do next? I called a friend who has been using carton box for his business. I aksed if he could reccomend a manufacturer. He did.

Guess what? Not only that I found myslef a cheap but reliable carton box, but also I ended up as becoming sales agent for this manufacturer for my region. I guess this is what the Indonesian proverb "One step, two or three island passed" means.

The great lesson that can be used here is that a reccomendation is probably the most efficient way of finding a reliable supplier or seller. A reccomended supplier or seller has proven his/her performance. This will certainly eliminate our business risk to some extent.

I hope you can learn from this article.

Sirs -

Are there any Indonesian companies that are not a scam and frauds who deal in highend carbon fiber bicycles?  I have just been scammed by an Alibaba company and am afraid that it will happen again.  There is no way to protect yourself if the the seller demands T/T or WU for payment.  I am in Los Angeles and have no way to get my money returned from the fake company.

I did not do proper background check so I am to blame as well but I thought that companies listed on this website were honest and professional.

I would love some insight from you both because I was dismayed to see how many people have been taken advantage of on this website.

Thank you and I await you responses.

Sincerely
