Why is the Name of Your Business Important?
Post 1 of 4

You might think that a name is just a name and that it will have little impact on the success of your business; however, you would be mistaken. This is the mistake that many businesses make as they come up with names for their companies. What you call your company can be very important in providing you with a business identity that is strong and will leave a lasting impact. You want to choose a business name that is going to be a reflection of what your product or service is all about. If you choose a name for your business that is too unique and creative, you may find that customers have a harder time finding you on the Internet or associating your name with your products or services.

Another thing that you need to keep in mind when you're choosing a name for your business is that this name will be your first contact with your customers. The first impression that you present to your customers can often be a lasting one. If you have a business that is selling scrapbook products, you'll want to have a business name that lets customers know that your business is about scrapbooks. For example, "Creative Scrapbooks" lets customers find you easily on the Internet and describes the product that you're selling. A name such as "Creative Crafts" won't be as definitive when it comes to the core of what your business is all about. Some people choose to name a business after themselves, and although this may work for companies that already have an established presence, it won't work well if you're just starting your company, unless you include mention of the product that you're selling as well.

An example of a business that includes your name would be "Terry's Creative Scrapbooks." This not only uses your personal name, it also lets your customers know what your business is selling. There are some benefits that come from using your name in your business title, such as the following:

1.Customers will be able to associate your personal name, corporate name, and your product together.

2.You'll become better known in the business community, both online and offline.

3.Your credit rating may be higher and stronger when your personal name is associated with your business. Keep in mind that if your business isn't successful, your credit rating may also pay the price. This is why many people, when they are first establishing a new business, choose to keep their personal finances separate from their business finances, which is typically recommended.

Choosing a name for your company is a task that you should research carefully before finalizing and selecting an identity. You need to make sure that you're not infringing on another company's name, or you may find yourself faced with a future lawsuit.

Nice topic you brought in.
I agree with you, selectig the name of the company is very important, as it will become an entity by itself.
In my case when I was brainstorming what name to use I have to come up with a bunch of options, as I wanted to make sure that name would be available in the Internet to buy it. So that took additional coordination in between the name I wanted and the available names in the Internet domain.
Moving forward as I plan to get into TV commercials. One mayor drawback of choosing long names is the 30-second spot you have for the TV commercial. Your name should be short like Sony, Nintendo, no more than three syllables, otherwise you will see your name truncated.
One more comment, if you plan to build a company for the long run, avoid using names of your kids, or yourself, they may not be intereseted in your business, or may not take control after you retire, focus on the products, and the service, the name should convery something from what you sell.
