I had a school who taught us English literature, and I have not forgotten his suggestion.
Keep a pocket diary, do lots of inputs either by reading, or watching documentary programs on the box. Write down every difficult word you come across, and after the whole show, if you still cannot guess the meaning, go an look it up from the Dictionary. Memorise the word, and spell it correctly and use it for your essay or conversations, and if you gain 10 words a day, in a month, you will have 300 new words to your vocab.

Look to see a root meaning. As one of an endless number of possible examples, take the word "spectacular." The central root meaning has to do with "to see." Then consider the following words that relate to this core meaning, sometimes directly often with a drifted meaning: inspect, respect, suspect, disrespect, spectacles, specs, specifications, specify... with a little investigations of "cognates" -- words that share a root -- one could come up with many dozens of etymologically related words with "to see." The philosopher Immanuel Kant said that we get to the unknow through the known.

Replying to [KILOIA]:Dear Kiloia
English is a language as Hindi is. The same way you learn new words in Hindi, apply it to English.
When I took Literature in 11th grade in Peru, I thought it was an easy subject, but when I start reading the master pieces from Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas LLosa, Miguel Angel Asturias, Ciro Alegria, the most important Latin American writers, I was surprised with the words I was finding, my goodnes, these were hard words I have never heard before when talking to classmates, or family members. Then I had no choice but started reading formal magazines, history books, literature books, etc. I learn to get familiar with those words and its importance. So even though you learn new words when interacting with people. You need to do your share of reading to learn more new words, and learn to use it in the context that the book is using it.
Plus reading is a beautiful hobby. I like to go to Central park in the heart of Manhattan loaded with my folding chair and the Sunday edition of the new York Times, and spend hours of reading and learning new words. Find a way to make your reading time very confortable and estimulating. And you will realize that reading will set you free and more knowledgeable of new words. Hope it helps.

Replying to [just do it]:Hi there
I guess reading is the most important activity when learning anything in general. Reading will improve your vocabulary.
I have a daughter who is 6 years old, and is surprising to see her drive for reading, she likes to read a book a day (those small books with 10 to 15 pages) and the teachers keep emphazising on that fact. Her reading skills have manifested in different types, also she is good in solving word problems, because she can understand the question, some of her classmates with some reading problems are having difficulties solving those word problems. Reading by itself won't help much,. but will give you powerfool tools to venture into the other skills speaking, and writing. So reading is critical, becasue it will help you learn new words, and with new words you could have more confidence in speaking or writing essays.

If you are writing a letter, or a passage, you do not want to use the same word too often, then you need a Thesaurus.
Thesaurus gives you words of similar or variant meanings to the main word. You will be impressed by the reader with some words that was left on the shelf for long time and it expresses the real situation.
