what are the pit falls in importing?
Post 1 of 18

Hi,

I like inputs frm the veterans.  I am looking to have some garments custom made in China and I am looking to hire an agent to oversea production, handle forwarding etc etc.

What pitfalls should I be watching out for?

My main concern is the agent doesn't understand my instructions totally.  ie I ask for chicken he gives me duck, even after I give him a sample of the chicken.  What am I going to do with a container load of ducks?

Hot Topic Recommend

Dealing with Chinese Suppliers • Shipping freight costs • Doing business in Christmas
• Business in economic crisis • Ensure a manufacturer is ethical
• Protect the business from copying • Be the last man standing
• To find the quality China goods • Payment beneficiary issue
• Buyer's starting steps in Alibaba • Suppliers like such payment terms

In my experience when dealing with Agents you need make sure of attention to detail before you send out samples, you need to be running in the same direction you may need to arrange a meeting either via computer or face to face to discuss your needs to make sure everybody knows where they are from the off otherwise it is possible you will end up with ducks instead of chickens if there is a language barrier then find someone who can communicate at that level but it is most they understand your needs before you go ahead with anything.  I hope this awnsers your question

here is a challenge for you lot.

Are you able to route LCL of goods to my nearest port which is Darwin, Australia.

Hai Wei has direct shipping from Shanghai but they only do FCL.  Otherwise, you have to go through Singapore.

Hello there,

There way to many problems with the garment business, since I have had experience with it, there are couple ways to make sure you get what you need, but in any case risk is always there.

The first one is to find the right agent, who understands you and knows the biz, he might cost a bit more, but long safes you a lot of trouble.

Secondly, major problems occure with communication, this is where you have to put all your stress into it, even for the little questions, nowadays you have interenet and webcams, makes it a whole lot easier, where as we used to trade samples till everything matched. But the initially at business start it is always recommended to go there personally before the products are being shipped out, after a couple of orders you guys will sync.

And thirdly, the most important one that is, to make sure that you don't lose, is the payment terms, always make sure that you pay only after inspection, or have some sort of security that makes sure that your agent is bound to you no matter what.

Additionally, always make sure that you make cardboard cuts for sizes you need for any design, that you can give your agent to use as a reference, safes you a lot of trouble later as well.

I could go on and on, but I hope this info will be enough.

peace

Hi,

To avoid ducks, I advise you to check two things first:

One is your communicating language. Make sure there's no language barrier.

Second is to ensure they have enough industrial knowledge on your products.

I guess this can be done easily as you can check it by a call, or whatever. But make sure they can understand completely and with a exact description or samples, you won't get a container load of ducks[em2]
