Culture Management
Post 1 of 4
World Wide Web is a world of its own.

Its citizens are called Netizens, and they surf the Cyber Waves on their keyboards.

A new breed of Business culture was born, and the laws and regulations controlling the cyber crooks who have a vast universe of cyber space to escape to, only to be led by their IP address, which identifies their country of origin and state.

Controls over the human factor are called social controls and managing these controls is called culture management. The human element of managing risk is the most troublesome aspect to many information technology professionals. The major risks of the human factor are:

@ bad judgement
@ honest errors
@ fraud; and
@ virus damage

Policies and procedures that are well-thought out, clearly articulated and backed by top management are a good mechanism for setting the cultural tone regarding information technology risks. Employees should be informed of appropriate and inappropriate actions and periodically reminded of these policies. Some firms have their employees read policies and sign statements indicating that they understand them and will follow them. Some firms have negative consequences inflicted on an employee found violating the policies.

The best controls are:

@ redundant - combining passive controls with active and formal controls with informal (E.g. passwords plus audits, policies plus shared values)

@ consistent - (E.g. policies are modeled and reinforced by top managers' behaviour; verbal prohibitions are accompanied by physical barriers to prevent the prohibited behaviour)

@ clearly written policies - widely communicated and enforced, and necessary for successful litigation

@ fair - perceived that way and applicable to everyone in the organisation

@ neither too detailed nor too restrictive - either of which raises control costs, interferes with effective operations, and promotes distrust and unethical behaviour

@ not a replacement for trust in employees - should complement a culture in which good performance is valued and rewarded and in which risk management is viewed as everyone's job

@ helpful - not adversarial or punitive

@ two-way channels - providing communication about risks, incidents and opportunities for improved control

@ supportive of valid organisational learning - from past experience

wel i believe business should serve the people. as it exists for the people. the business of people is business or rather the people of business are people, I belive when an employee is finished and has nothing to work on, instead of pretending to be busy or taking bathroom breaks like he has the runs, he should be allowed to surf the net strictly on missions to help the firm. posting little suggestions like this is helpful to employess and reduces stress, they should be encouraged toi engage in idle espionage and snooping on any riivals that drop their gaurd, be friending rivals in chatrooms anfd then obtaining a social contract from which you can put them in positions of indelicate acceptance of you suggestions and delicate probeing of their intelligence on target you desire.

Security [em9]

As a computer user, I have surf the internet and has experiences the wild wilderness that cyber space have to offer. [em14]

The most common scammer are the Nigerian scammer. They talk with broken English but they are intellectually small. You can detect low intellect by asking some question. I have the experiences of talking with some nigerian scammer to know how they operates. The most criminal commodities that Nigerian want to steal is bank information. They also used tactic such as forging check and pretending to be a close relative or friend. Most commonly. they will have you to deposit a forged check and want you to transfer money via Western Union. Nigerian scammer that are good with computer will use keylogger to steal information by using deception via chat messenger. Avoid accepting files that have .exe, .bat, and .pic at all time. [em5]

When surfing the internet, alway have firewall on at all time. One time I visit a website, the website downloaded virus and software into my computer. There were less damages but made me smarter how I surf the internet. [em20]

Trading

Most Western are scares of trading with foriegner. Alway show proof of an item that you are selling. Every westerner and foriegner must have a webcam. If you don't have a webcam, you are trading blindly with someone who you don't know. To create a good business friendship, alway sell small number of item. If the item is good and have arrived as promise, then the Westerner will trade and order more products. Westerner and Foriegner has come a long way but are seperated by language barrier. Westerner speak English but the foriegner speak different language. If foriegner learn the language of the business world then they can commuicates properly with the Westerner. [em17]
