Mobile Commerce upcomming methord of business!
Post 1 of 5
Dear Friends
E-Commerce is a old thing now. People are gettin quite comfertable and used to it. Going on internet and doing business. Although, business strikes are still less through it.
Now, M-Commerce that is commercial activities through mobile.
As mobile has became a very vercitile device, this apporach has a good scope.
The biggest problem faces is finding potential buyer between huge amount of people.
Here the companies who provide databases come into the picture. They are becoming popular since the rise of E-Commerce.
I would like you people to share your view on this.

I did a research on M-Business back in 2001 for the American market, when I was working on my MBA, and let me tell you there had been lots of work and prototypes even commercial launch osf services in many places. Plus the ubiquituous situation of the mobile phone, as it penetrates more and more in the telecom market, is considered a big advantage to the end consumer. However the hords of avid high-tech gadget lovers are not there yet, so the prices for those services are still quite high, and not affordable to the average user.
M-Commerce is a service that allows you to pay for services with your mobile phone. You simply add an accesory to your phone, so when it is scanned by the reader, your credit card balance could be reviewed and deducted the amount being paid.
On the techical side, Ithe local providers of mobile phone should be ready to implemet it. Network equipment providers have designed those systems to be add-on to the current network. Even the wireless company I worked for, is investigng heavily in broad-band services and of course M-Commerce as part of it. However the risks are high, laying out the network to manage those services for a mass audience are costly and if marketing studies says that the volume of subscribers will be low, the break-even point is too long and from the financial perspective not attractive. You don't want to spend 50 million dollars to recover it in more than 20 years, when you could get better return by investing in the stock market. So even though M-Commerce has lots of potentials to add the sale opportunities to many merchants, it is still not ready for show-time. Even with mobile broad-band services. There has been a great deal of investment on that turf, but the usage is still low and the break-even point is still at large. Seems to me that the end customer is still in doubts on the quality of security systems that protect your ID and detail information. As we hear sad stories everywhere of identity thefts, nobody wants to be the next victim, and still reluctant to use those services. Plus a visit to the mall is always attarctive, and they can buy all their needs in a single location.
Hope it sheds some light on where we stand regarding M-Commerce

Dear Vicente
Thank you for you valueable information. I really appreciate that.
But, I would like to elaborate as you were talking about M-Commerce 5-6 years back. The technology at that time was on introduction stage.
Now, the technology is more economical and can be used at a much cheaper rate.
With the help of WAP (Wireless Access Protocol), Mobile can communicate with a PC or internet. This has led to a revolution. Now even a big service center can use it a way and find it cost efficient.
I think you will find it more attrective if you update on its deveopment.

Vicente:
You are correct to say that Mobile Commerce is still in its infant stage and the cost of connecting the Cell phone to the Internet is tremendously high. The other substitute, with wireless area network aka WiFi is more acceptable to the purse than the reading and sending of emails through the mobile phone, not to say surfing the Internet.
The limitations are: low bandwidth, high latency and less connection stability. However the third generation mobile system, the 3G has high speed connectivity and could do video streaming (not less than 300 Kbps.)
More developments were made since the previous problems of low intensity display handphone screens without colour. The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) uses internet standards such as Extended Markup Language (XML), User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Internet Protocol (IP). Manay of the protocols are based on Internet standards such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and TLS, but have been optimised for the unique constraints of the wireless environment.
WMLScript and WML are used to product WAP content for the mobile phone, where the contents can be dusplayed on small screen and navigation done by one-hand operation. It is also scalable from a 2-line text display to full graphic screen and designed to minimise bandwidth required and maximise the number of wireless network types that can deliver WAP contents. Multiple networks will be targeted, includes:
GSM 900, 1,800 and 1,900 MHz; Interim Standard (IS-136); digital European cordless communication (DECT); Time-division multiple access (TDMA); personal communication service (PCS); FLEX and CDMA code division multiple access. All bearers also supported systems including: SMS, USSD, CSD, CDPD and GPRS.
At the moment, the access is pricy due to the number of platforms and networks it has to access, but the benefits is that it is inter-operatable, scalable and Open System.
The Open Mobile Alliance website at: http://www.openmobilealliance.org/about_OMS/openness.html
shows the various protocols, architects and sytems including Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Wireless Telephony Application (WTA) and the various WAP variants and languages such as Wireless Markup Language (WML) and Extensive Markup Language (XML).
According to the International Engineering Consortium (IEC), the future of the WAP is promising, as WAP is an application environment and set of communication protocols for wireless devices designed to enable manufacturer-vendor-and technology independent access to the Internet and Advanced Telephony Services. Soon it will be one integrated system of the WWW - Mobile handset messaging, mobile to telefax access and voice messaging.
Then it would not only limit to the mobile phone, it will be accessible to the cable tv networks, the merging of media and platforms. By the time all these are merged together, we will not call it m-commerce, or tv-commerce, or w-commerce only electronic commerce.

Wow, that much been going on, all the technical stuffs.
Technology made our lives better and safer, providing the benefits to save time and energy to do something more constructive and productive. It has come to our homes, and a part of our lifestyle, we cannot ignore it.
People who refuse to adopt the new technology, and do not change are the ones to lose out. They are the laggards, and the late majority who will accept products and services of new innovations only after it has expanded its life cycle.
