Walk That Extra Mile
Post 1 of 18
These days, walking has become a commodity. With so many gyms coming up in all places where people make use of joggers, or treadmills for a walk, a walk has become expensive. And most people drive down to the gym.
Home to office and back in a car, going to meeting and back in a car and rest of the time before the computer make life dull and devoid of necessary physical activity.Obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol circulatory problems set in at an early age.
Walking gives lots of benefits.Improves circulation and digestion, burns extra calories, converts bad cholesterol(LDL) into good cholesterol(HDL).
I am ardent walker. I walk at least four miles everyday.I do not follow any strict walking schedule. If I have fifteen minutes to spare, I go walking for a meeting. Walk to the market.Park my car as far away from my office.Use stairs instead of elevators.Make use of just every opportunity to walk that extra mile.
Walk is my main excersice.I am slightly overweight, but my Blood Pressure, Blood sugar, Cholesterol, pulse rate are almost perfect, thanks to walking and healthy eating combined.

Replying to [sixer]: Hi Sixer, physicians here recommend "Brisk Walking", if you walk long distance, carry a bottle of water with you also a towel.

This link http://www.aarp.org/health/fitness/walking/walking_techniques_to_keep_up_the_pace.html is about "Walking Techniques to Keep Up the Pace"

How to tell if you are walking briskly??

If you are walking briskly - you are not trying to run or just casually strolling - you are walking as if you were a bit late for an appointment or train.

You will be breathing deeper than you would normally.

You can still hold a conversation.

You will experience a warm glowing feeling throughout your body

You may start to sweat a bit or alot depending on how overweight you are.Wearing layers of clothing will help you here - you can undo or take off one layer as you feel hotter - but remember to put them back on again when you stop walking.

Your heart will start to beat a bit faster, and this is really good for it. Your heart is a muscle and needs exercise like all your other muscles.

If you can talk very easily then you are not walking briskly enough so up your pace a little - remember not to stride out (take big steps) but take more short steps.

NoteIf you get out of breath or can’t talk at all or are finding it difficult to walk, then you are going too fast and should SLOW down.

Remember to build up the distances that you walk and pace at which you walk gradually .
The good thing is that walking will burn up calories at whatever speed you go at. If you walk slower then you just have to walk a bit further.

If you are very overweight then you will need to be able to stroll for at least 30 minutes before you even consider walking briskly.
You should always consult your health professional before taking up any form of exercise and that includes walking.

Wish you all good health,

Moolan[em1]

THis is a healthy topic, and you put it in a positive way to encourage walking to the audience. I guess most of all of us know the benefits of walking, but don't make the effort to make it a daily activity. As I recall my activities from last week, I have realized my walking experience is very limited. From my apartment to my car, then from the company parking lot to my office, not even 100 meters, and then the way back.
On weekends when I see my clients, I usually park in front of their businesses, so little walking. I need to improve on that.
I noticed also another benefit of walking. usually my routine revolves around my office, making phone calls, writing e-mails, answering e-mails, attend meetings, prepare reports, do some analysis on forecasting and planning (my expertise) and writing code for some databae application, and the like. Many times I have noticed that when stuck in problems with many issues, I can no think openly inside the office. I have ventured out to get some air and do some walking around the block to look at the problem from a different angle, and to my surprise, many good ideas click right there, then I run back to the office to test out that concept, and prepare the write up for consideration to my team. So walking also give you peace of mind when is needed the most to give you a clear view of problems (not bias), then giving you opportunity to visualize better the problem and come up with more inclusive solutions.
My final message to all the audience. Get up and walk, do your daily share of walking and you will see the great benefits.
