Most of the stations will do the temperature calibration in-house and send the tape length validation to external laboratory for auditing. However, in 2007, the laser time-of-flight or phase measurement was introduced. This instrument measures the time difference for a laser beam to travel from point A to point B and reflected back to the instrument. The distance is measured in the time it took to come back and it is in nano second. That is what separates this instrument from the ultrasonic, the beam is not interfered by any obstacles nearby, but for a longer distance, it needs a reflective target.

Then we have to subtract the "Dead Zone" of the sensor for the Electrical Zero to get the actual reading.
