If you like the idea of working from home, this should be a welcome news. GlaxoSmithkline (GSK) is running a pilot project with its leadership team (those reporting directly to the managing director) on how comfortable people are working from home.


The new scheme was kicked off two months back with employees being allowed to work from home once-a-week according to their convenience. There are 10 people in the leadership team and till now they have been happy working from home as this helps them take care of personal work too.


This arrangement works the best if to wrap up some personal work at home while not trying to hamper work schedule.


A major advantage from the company’s perspective. There is a huge cost of rental space. Add to this, the cost of transportation and food offered in the cafeteria when the employees work out of office.
It is estimated that, once-a-week working out of home would save 20% of work time.


Out of the total of 2,604 employees, 350 would be working from office (these are the ones who may potentially be allowed to work out of home). If once a week working from home could be made possible, one floor rented office spaces cost could be saved. This means a huge saving annually!


This concept is being worked out in two stages where the first phase is about allowing people to work from home and then introducing hot- desking, that is, flexible work stations with employees working out of spaces assigned to them as they enter office.


But this arrangement (hot-desking) can’t be applied to all. It would be easier for people who travel frequently and who are not attached to their work spaces. Initially the pilot is being carried out on 15-20% of the employees. The response would be reviewed after six months to decide the feasibility of the project.


It’s a common practice overseas (P&G in Singapore has its employees working from home two days a week) but it will certainly take time before companies in India embrace it.

Indians are emotional about their work spaces and it would certainly not be easy before a concept like hot- desking gets acceptance, but somewhere a beginning has to be made.
