Why are Chinese sales reps interested in knowing a "prospective" customer's country?
Post 1 of 8

I have noticed that, once I start talking to almost all the sales reps for various companies, their primary interest is where I come from? Once I ask how much is the price of a product, they don't want to bring it out until they know where you are from.

Have you encountered this same scenarios? Why are they interested so much in destiniation when I ask for a price of a particular product they are selling?  Has desitnation got something to do with the price?

Dear ealfreetv,

Very Good Question.

Yes, it indeed is a smart way to quote your price if you know the destination country.

A good seller will then find out the cost of local price of that commodity in destined country and also the duty structure.Based on these, a chinese seller can quote a price that will be cheaper than local substitute and he is not quoting a price lower than necessary

Yes,the seller usally need to consider the Country, ecomomic area, different area the tariff is different, and also for textile products to USA,there are quota limited, some other country then no need,so the price is different, and also many buyer also need consinder the shipping freight, per this, must get the final destination. One same product, per requiring country is different, the quality requiring also different, for example, many American,EU contries need pass CE,FDA,LFGB,etc. So all this effect the products cost.

Dear Friend,

You really did come up with a good question. In my opinion, to ask the possible clients` country in the first time is mainly based on the two points as follows:

(1) Consering the Trustworthiness and Courtesy   To know the possible clients` country, company etc is very nessary. If the the new client asks you for the price in the first time and he or she doesn`t want to tell you his or her country, his or her company and even his or her name, I think it is no need to talk with him or her. Because most of this kinds of clients do have no honesty to do business with you, They may just want to know a rough price and once they get it, they will disappear in your contacting list forever. Either always show offline situation to you or have no any responce to your message. In China to ask new people where he or she is from and name for first meeting is very common and it is also considered as a good manner. If you dont want to tell, you may be misunderstood not polite.

(2) Considering the Price Stratage   You may know the same product can be made with different quality, The different quality will result in different cost. Different countries and areas have different requirements for the same products. To ask your country or destination will be easier for the seller to know your quality requirements and your local consuming level, which will make the seller much more easier to quote more and more resonable and competitive price. To do so also predict that the seller is very responsible for his or her clients as well as his or her company. It will do good for both parties. Therefore to ask the possible clients` country for the first time is a must. Dont you think so??? Welcome your comments!

OK, Bye,everyone!

Hi, My friend,

Beside all the reasons they have mentioned for you, there is another reason.

Most exporting companies, either a factory or a trading company, usually got agencies in some countries. And for some of these agencies got exclusivity covering their country.

This is a problem if the Chinese company is big or unique in its products.
