It all really depends on how quickly you need the goods. Look at it this way (for
container shipments via sea):
1. Transit time from Hong Kong to Los Angeles, CA is about 12-14 days.
2. Transit time from Hong Kong to New York is about 23-25 days.
If you do your paper work correctly and employ the right logistics folks to move
your shipments, shipping into your city via the US West Coast should be faster
for you. Again, it all depends on the people you use to help you move your
cargo from the West coast port into your city. If you opt to get your cargo in
from Los Angeles/Long Beach, for example, you have something like
10-11 days on hand to get the goods from there to your city and beat the East
coast transit time. However, there is one other critical factor - the cost. You would
need to speak to your logistics company or freight forwarder and see which option works
out cheaper for you in the end, keeping in mind the transit time factor. Strictly speaking,
this is not a 1-to-1 cost comparison. You have to take into consideration the final transit
times as well and the kind of goods you are marketing. Sometimes it makes sense to pay a
little more on freight if it means receiving your cargo that much quicker (especially on
seasonal items).
Hope this helps.
