Why people use shut up for human being and shut down for computers

When you tell someone to "shut up", you're asking them to close their mouth and stop speaking.  (additionally this is considered rude unless speaking with a friend or it is in jest)

In the phrase "shut down", shut is used much like the word "close".  So if you "shut down" a computer you close it down.

The phase is an idiom.

you can also say "shut off", but you never "shut on" something. That's the only exception to this versatile verb "to shut".

Replying to [Deepali]: When talking about items requiring power the phrase Shut Down is used. On large electrical panels there is a switch, up is for connected or on and down for disconnected or off.
Lock up your jaw! or Keep your jaw up!, are original phrases when requesting silence.
A common phrase.. Shutting up in the barn is used to restrain dumb animals.
I am getting to it!!
When rebuking someone the phrase Shut up... was used to convey they should restrain their dumb tongue.
