What was your security measures on your first overseas purchase??
Post 12 of 32

Its less likely a TrustPass member is a scammer. The membership fees and the amount of security check you have to go through would draw a scammer away. Plus when you post something Alibaba actually calls you and checks with the product you are posting. Hope this helps your search for partners on this site.

Dear Juan,

So far I have done good business with both Free Members, Trust Pass Members and Gold Suppliers.

My first method of checking out any company before I decide to purchase from it, is asking for the VAT number and Business ID number. Once I've checked that both numbers do indeed belong to the company, I give them a call and try to get an English speaking person on the phone who can explain in clear language all terms and conditions regarding international orders. I also ask for a written version by email.

The response time with email correspondence is an important detail for me. If it takes over a week to get a reply from a company, it gives me the feeling that deliveries will be postponed just as easily, so in that case I will not place an order. If the questions that I've sent via email are not answered to my satisfaction, I also stay away from that company.

Some companies are willing to send a sample product, others reduce their usual MOQ for a first order. When a company is really interested in doing business overseas, it accepts small orders. With small I mean both in quantity as well as money value. Try to negotiate a 50/50 deal: 50% of the payment up front, 50% after you've had the chance to check the quality of the product(s).

About payment methods: if a company keeps insisting on payment via Western Union or company cheque, stay away from it. You're likely not going to receive what you've ordered.  PayPal payments are also a bit tricky for the first couple of orders from one and the same company, but it is a good method when you've already established a solid business relationship with the supplier. Personally I prefer payments via bank transfer. In case of non-delivery my bank can cancel the payment and get me my money back.

Good luck with your business!

In theory, TrustPass would keep scammers away from this site due to the costs involved. Actually, however, for a successful scammer, paying the TrustPass membership is only a small investment. Just take a look at the Safe Tradings section of this forums to see how many people were scammed by TrustPass and Gold Supplier members.

No kind of membership label will save you the work of due diligence. In this respect, for me it is all the same if a supplier has any one of above memberships, I lose my legal claim for any loss if I do not do my due diligence, and this is the case in most law systems all around the world.

hi,

i agree that working with someone who has that trust membership thing is no guarantee that they are legit. I think the best way is to order one unit perhaps a sample and see where it goes. The other option is to use a friend who is in the area to take a look and do some research.

first orders are really tough and you just have to hope that in the end, this will bear some fruit.

hi, here are two companies you need to avoid totally. they are Ggadgets Stores Ltd in the uk, email gadgetstoreltd@yahoo.com, and shenzhen shengli technology co., ltd at shengli-evip@hotmail.com. Both are scams.  The first one sent nothing and took my money, while the second one sent me a purse instead of the two phones i ordered. neither would honor their transaction and am taking legal matters on both.  learning alot about international companies, unfortunately. qualityelectronicstore@embarqmail.com

For security measures, which depend on what kind of  goods you want to purchase from oversea.for example,if you want to buy  some brand products, such as Sony ,Dell computer, you should ask the vendors to offer the agent certificate from Brand company.and you should not believe anyone who promise  to supply good products from some special channel.

if you want to buy some customizing products, you better ask your friends who are near this company to visit this company, and help you to take some pictures and evaluate their equipments if can produce your products.

I am sourcing too,I just want to buy some products at a competitive price, not lowest price,

Hi Juan.

The security trade is that you get the products from the supplier sucessfully.  You pay for it and get the products you buy.

No matter he belong to a company or not. If he can send the products to you as you require. That's okay.   Of course, at the beginning , you dont know him well. so check with his customers.  chat with him. from the details , you can know more about him. But just be careful.

Thanks

Donnie
