Re: Dealing with Chinese Suppliers
I read larry's article and completely understand his feelings . Sometimes,it is very embarassed thing while both side don't understand each other's needs because of language obstacle. Actually ,it is not only because of the poor english ability , culture knowledge affects both side as well.

Another problem: Buyer and Suppliers always have their own goals. Both side want acheive their goals ,communication becomes very complex. Actually, money is very important for everyone, and businessman know more about them. It is not easy for both side to relax, both side have their worries.

Business communication is very tough thing, we are very careful during the negotiation. We are looking forward to see the perfect harmony between buyers and suppliers.

Cheers!

Re: Dealing with Chinese Suppliers
Hi Sara, I tend to agree with your comments.

But having done this business for a long time, there are still many things I don't always understand.

For example, everyone talks about culture. If I want a product I write to a factory and ask for the details. The factory should be able to answer my enquiry based on the information i provide, if not then they should ask.

Really, so many people make this so difficult when it does not have to be so hard to do.

I send many enquiries with exact details i want such as printing cost, packing details etc. but i get a response with just price. Thats just lazy, thats not culture. People here complain they do not get business, but they never think about the poor level of service they offer.

You are also correct in talking about money. Once again though, so many are looking for quick money. They want to make all the profit on the first deal. So many Chinese (and a lot of buyers too) don't understand the concept that if you offer good service, are honest and offer good products, then over time custoemrs will keep coming back and you will make your money over a long term, not just in the first deal.

Business does not have to be so tough. People make it tough through things like greed and laziness.

Firmly oppose

Not  all Chinese suppliers are those you have sued. Unquestionably, some of them are favour in money first, but most of them wish for a long-term cooperation. I believe that  a win-win sitution is our common target.

a) Try to look for qualified suppliers who specialize in export business. The standard and market requirements of different countries will not be the same. The game rules and business practice are quite different as well. The suppliers who focus on export business will study more about the market needs, tastes, standards, and trend of the major oversea markets when they develop their product lines, and their staffs will act and think more internationally. Not too many companies can do equally well on both domestic and export business, because seldom resources of human, products designs, internal system, marketing tools and channels etc. can be shared, and some companies just cannot afford or are willing to invest for both equally.

b) Regarding language, the English level in China is lower than other non-English speaking countries. The English education here does not put too much effort on practising speaking and listening, but on grammer and reading. People who do not work in international business or foreign companies will forget most of the English words after they leave schools. It should be getting improved in future generations, as people now realize the importance of practising a language during study and in daily life. However, being patient and trying to express in different way to achieve correct comprehension is essential in international communication between different nations. Buyers expect staffs of suppliers can speak good English, while suppliers may hope their clients can speak good Chinese. Customers might have the chance to make suppliers feel frustrated as well. Stand and think in each other's postion will be of help.

c) Cooperate with a professional sourcing agent will be of great help and buyers will benefit from their valuable service.
