It IS legal to import electronic products from China, as long as they are NOT branded items like Apple etc, as these are copies and fakes, and they WILL be stopped by your customs and you loose them.

Unbranded or factory's own brand names are OK.

I am looking to import ipods from China. Lot of Chinese and Indonesian companies contacted with me, offering “original branded” apple's ipods Mp4 second generation 1Gb from $26 to $70 etc

I asked all these Chinese suppliers for any UK buyers address for the reference but so far I haven't heard anything from these company.

Is there any brand manufacture of ipod in china? And is not allowed to sell branded imports from china into UK market?

Hi Mate

The facts are that sure there are many suppliers selling these products but if these are copies then you will be held at hand when found by customs in UK.

There are many that use the Apple information, but are still not made by this trade mark company, same with other well know items.
Apple do make ipod in China but not for resale to the trade, only for their own exports.

you can buy other mp3 that look like the ipod, i have samples like this and they are well made and maybe better than the apple as they have more, like radio, games, and are much lower in price.

For you to sell in the UK market you will first need to check the sales for these items, you will see from ebay that there are direct imports rom china with a 5 day delivery service, so it make it very easy to buy at lowe cost, yet you will see that they still don't sell so easy?

Like any buying, you need to get the best deal from the supplier, but going for min orders will just give you the normal price and have no edge to the other sellers in UK, so will mean making larger orders so that your product cost would be lower.

To sell to the trade in UK you will be best to have a vat number as we know vat will be charged to all imports, and you will have a duty charge too.

Think about the warranty cover, how will you help the customer when they have a faulty product?, you can pass this stage with flyin colours you will be ahead of many sellers.

How will you get your products known to your customers, how will they pay you, what about the delivery service to them.

Last you can look for drop shipping suppliers in china, and maybe this can be an option for your new business.

Good luck [em17]

Hi Mate,

Thanks for your reply.

Mr Jonbeck, I don’t know what kind of business you do in United Kingdom. I seen that many Chinese companies selling their own brands of Mp4 but problems is, UK customers aren’t willing to pay any unfamiliar product.

Yes I have been looking for the Apple’s products from china with FCC Number marked on them. As far as I know, all the products with FCC Mark are considered legal and Genuine and one can sell them anywhere in the world. Is it true?

I have some good marketing ideas, what I need is a good supplier with very good products and some after sale service.

I am looking if any guy from UK, to refer me any Electronics company in China.

Drop shopping supplier’s business is only possible if I have a manufacturing plant in China or I have personal relationship with any Chinese manufacture.

Any other Suggestion Mr Jonbeck!!!!

sure there are many supplier that will drop ship direct to your customers in UK, and this way will save you on products of stock, remember that product copies for brand names can be good, but still are fake.
You can also have your own brand put on the product, and remember that the price would sell the product, if its lower people will contact you.

Do you have a we site set up, what would be your outlay in money terms.
Contact me later, we can talk more.

I have gone through this experience so i can tell you now easily:

1. Look for unique products and profit opportunities.
2. Do the maths Selling price less Fob Cost + Freight + Customs + Vat = Profit. Obviously if Profit is Negative - stay away.
3. When you do costing Freight per unit reduces as quanity increases. When quantity increases Risk is higher.
4. Do a Market trial - Does not matter if the result is a loss. You can work out that at higher volume you can make a profit.
5. Post in Buy Lead in Alibaba for the range of products. You will be flooded with offers. Select a few that look promising and are responsive.
6. Take good pictures and do solid write-up to use for marketing.
7. Look at various outlets for sale : Ebay, Amazon, Tazbar, Your own web site etc. Amazon needs UPC Bar code for each product (Universsal each product that cost about 50$)
8. You need a temporary VAT Number called TURN or Psudo VaT Number. This you need to apply after the goods have been shipped but before it lands here.
9. I used www.companywizard.co.uk to form a company. They did the job in 2 days.
10. Find a friendly freight Agent to use for collecting goods from the supplier. TNT, UPS and the likes will take your Pant and Shirt too when you are shipping small quantities or get your supplier to quote you + freight.
11. Take Public Liability insurance - just in case something goes wrong.
12. Open bank account. Mine I did with Natwest Direct - they give 18 months free banking.

There are millions of profit opportunities, with people waiting with Cash in hand in queue waiting to be served. Do your bit , little bit , one small step a day and you will be successful.

Like Confucious said : The journey of a thousand miles starts with a first step.
Make this first step and make it your voyage of discovery and adventure.

Best wishes.

I really appreciate your time and guidance to me, and special thanks to Mr Jonbeck who followed my conversation.

Yes, Drop Shop Suppliers is a good idea to deliver a product to customer at reduced price but one can loose the grip on business easily. Control Management is an important part of all businesses. Chinese suppliers are desperate to catch some customers from the UK market. I don’t want to market for Chinese companies, secondly I don’t have lot of money to invest into the market either. Therefore working on drop shop supplier strategy isn’t my first choice.

At the moment, I am looking to have a good start. I love the idea of making own brand but it needs lot of investment, long term planning and clever business strategies. That doesn’t need to come across in our conversation at the moment.

I have very simple, realistic and physically viable selling strategy which later on can be changed/develop with the progress of my business.

At the moment, what I need is some good products with very good price to test my whole business plan and jump physically into the real world of business. I will appreciate any support whatever from the community of this world.

Thanks Mr sivaras to share your personal experience and guide me like a father. There is one issue which I have been struggling a lot is about a reliable supplier with very good product/price. Thanks for highlighting the issue of freight agents, I wasn’t quite sure about their attitude before.
