What is Agriculture's worst enemy?
Post 1 of 20
There are some pests which cause devasations in the farmer's produce, some are less damaging than others and the chief destroyer is a swarm of locusts.

Other dangers such as climatic changes, hail stones, or drought and floods.
Which of these do you think is the worst enemy or the Mother of all ills?

Replying to [Street Smart]:

In general the most dangerous one for agriculture is drought and lack of water. Because there, all the plants are dependant on rain to survive and bear.

And to me the second most dangerous one is the lack of market for the produces. When the farmers fail in selling and converting their produces into money to live on, they leave agriculture and immigrate to the urban areas for seeking new businesses and jobs to earn their bread and butter.

Further, epidemics are a great enemy and threat for agriculture and animal breeding. We all have seen the results of BSE and Bird flue.
Thousands of cattle and millions of birds were killed and caused very huge losses.

Although insect harms and some other diseases can be challenged upto some extents, wildlife losses are also a prominent threat for agriculture, which is more difficult to overcome..

You are right for countries like South Korea.

Farming every plot of land available, even next to car parks in Kimhae City, I saw little plots of vegetable growing. Urbanisation encroaches and pollutes the land with the exhaust fumes of diesel engine vehicles, form layers of black soot over the leaves. Korea is a mountain mass country, and the farmers grow cash-cow crops like Ginseng for big returns.

Industrialisation has also help to add to the woes of farming in Korea. Pollution of the air, acid rains, water pollution, building of roads, the asphalt and concrete jungle and human activities, all working towards the demise of the agricultural group. Land is getting more expensive, and agricultural produce is under pressure to be profitable, employing labour intensive farming method is out of date and becoming less viable.

Ignorance or lack of knowledge is also a great enemy to agriculture. Agriculture works alongside with modern Science.
Tests on soil pH for Acidic or Alkaline condition.
The use of right type of fertilizers, the Amonium nitrates or phosphates, the water-soluble quick release or slow release fertilizers.
Irrigation, watering the crops and applying the right amount of water at the right time.
Pest controls and herbicides use to keep the weeds away from the crops.

Fortunately, poeple in certain areas in India have woken up to save there farmlands from being converted into industrial belts, forcing state and fedral governments to rethink about earmarking agricultural lands as sites for Special Economic Zones for setting up factories.

Too easy to answer SS........ Human Beings. The earth did fine without us screwing around with things. Everything stayed in a balance, up one century, down the next.

Until man showed up and started trying to force the earth to do things it isn't supposed to....... Then crying about it once we have screwed everything up.

Who is the government? For a democracy, it is the will and election of the people.

The basic need is agriculture, and for countries which do not produce enough food for the people, they have to depend on foreign countries to import. Singapore is a tiny nation that has very minimal agricultural activities due to land scarcity.

We depend on countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and neighbouring South East Asian countries, including the countries down under, for the meat and milk produce.

Replying to [Street Smart]:I think the major problem to agriculture is massive development of surrounding. This is not bad if we do not destroy our environment. Country living is more enjoyable than in the city. Like technology is good but, we only produce knowlegeable people but people with wisdom. In these fast phase world we do not produce philosopher anymore. Why? We are busy to make money, not bad either but we also need the other side of life to live not just existing.
