Replying to [Jingxia shi]:We are in the alcoholic beverage business and close to 100% of all Togo, Benin, Cote d'Ivore inquiries are frauds. We sadly learned the hardway too. We sent samples in the past but the receiver disappeared in the dark....

There are basically three options for sending samples. If both the merchandise and the shipping/mailing hardly cost anything, you might send the sample for free if the inquirer gives you a good impression. If the sample itself is cheap, but the shipping a little more expensive, send it freight collect. And if both are expensive, only customers who are already accredited with you should receive a free sample. Everybody else will have to pay COD (merchandise plus shipping).
Of course there are always exceptions to the rules, but that is the "feeling" you will have to develop over time. As soon as you are there, you will do a lot of "risky" business, but overall make a good income, as most of the times you'll sense where dangers are ahead. Losses will be negligible, especially when compared to all the business opportunities you have taken advantage of.

Replying to [Jingxia shi]: he is just looking for potential supplier as a backup. Or this customer is actually your competitor.

Replying to [Jingxia shi]:
i think your customer would have sample testing of your sample.
Or they would be more competitive supplier more than your company. Or your customer's end-user has changed their mind into contacting directly with your company.
There are some buyers like that. Don't be dissapointed with this situation. There are so many strange people all over the world.
Just have broad-minded.

Replying to [Jingxia shi]: Do not worry as others have said take the samples as an investment. I mean do not send furniture as a sample ! simple small pieces that are not useable by themself is better. If the lead feels good and you feel they will do business it will be worth it. I as a buyer have always asked for samples. How can you expect to do business without seeing a sample, test the items and maybe even show to the end customers. I agree if it is a cheap item make the investment. As a buyer I have no fear of paying for samples if they are reasonably priced. I have asked for and received free samples and I will be doing business with that company for certain when I am ready to buy, after I due my due diligence. It is a great ice breaker. Make sure you know and confirm they received the samples. Maybe the person you sent them to no longer works for the company and their email has been deleted-

Replying to [Jingxia shi]: We are crafts manufacturer and exporter. We have ever meet a new customer, who had paid the samples fee and express cost by westunion before we sending the samples to him. He confirmed receiving our samples and showed his satisfaction with our products, but without any response about placing order for us. I felt a little disappointed at such a case, and I don't know what he was thinking about. But anyway, I think it is normal that we ask our customer for samples fee because we have paid much on making the samples for them. However, we will pay back all the samples fee to the customer if he/she places order in the future no matter what the qty of the order is.

Hi Sabrina,
Tennis shoes as samples? You better make sure that you only offer them COD! You may trust people as much as you like, but that doesn't mean that everybody deserves it. Watch out for sharks!
Otherwise, I wish you all the best, especially because you come across as a nice, trustworthy person.
