Thanks for the advice! Obviously I have already thought in China, but was hoping to receive some input from people who have actually used Chinese profiles and can tell me their first-hand experience.

One of the aluminium production base is in Foshan city, Guandong.
I am not in Foshan. But I went to visit the factories with my buyer from finland this June.
The buyer received the container now, and satisfied with the quality of aluminium profile.
I am willing to introduce that factory for you. You can ask my buyer for his feedback about the quality if you like.

We bought aluminum channel from a Chinese company twice in 2008. We were able to sent samples of what we wanted which helped a lot but still the fist order was not finished to our liking.
First order we requested a sample, checked it, told the manufacturer what needed to be changed and gave our ok to proceed with the order. The changes didn't get made.
Second order we got a sample noted what needed to be changed and insisted on a second and third sample to be SURE it was right before giving aproval to proceed with the order. Much better!
We learned that it helps to know the technical jargon, be very clear on requirements, there's no substitute for samples and, for us, a broker is indispensible. Basically we had a trial by fire and came out just a little singed!

What you described in your post was exactly the kind of experience I suspected i would have if I bought from "just any old" factory.
In the meantime I had more contact with Jasmine, a Chinese helper, (see her message above) and one of her satisfied clients. Coincidence has it that she has some experience with aluminum and was able to find the right factory for her client, and also all those little "wrinkles" were ironed out. So I'll get her help, too, to ensure a smooth operation.
I would never dare buying directly from any Chinese factory at all. The language barrier and cultural differences you mentioned are the main reason for that.
