If an American asked you for advice on how to sell into the Chinese market, you would advise him to hire Chinese locals who grew up in China and understand how Chinese customers make their buying decisions.

It works the same if you want to enter the US market. If you want to generate trust, if you want to make buyers comfortable... hire US locals (and pay them US salaries)... then listen to them.

They grew up in the US and they are used to selling goods on value instead of on price. They have to... US manufacturers are never the lowest cost producer. Us marketing locals understand how customer decision making works in the mature market economy in which they grew up. They know how to generate trust. They know how to capture more of the mark up on your products.

We help overseas companies enter the US market. We have found Chinese decision makers rather arrogant and insistent on doing it their way. We have stopped accepting them as clients. They resist paying US rates and resist accepting US ways of selling.

They end up selling to buyers to come to China to do business the Chinese way and then return to the US, do business the US way there... and then capture most of the mark up on the product.

These buyers never permit the Chinese company to own the relationship with their own end customer. The buyers make sure they can always replace one Chinese supplier with another. They never permit the Chinese company to develop a relationship of trust.

No one works for free. If you find someone who you think is working for you for free... whoever it is they are working for.... it is not you.

Hire some Americans who speak American accented English and who have experience selling to other Americans. Hire US locals with pre-existing relationships and experience. Make sure they work to help you create and maintain these customer relationships.

I am not certain that I explained this as well as I could... but I hope you I did it well enough so you understand it.

I am new to doing business via the internet.  However I don't see how it is different to doing business through the telephone or even face to face.

The internet seems to me to be a good place to start to gather leads.  Meet new people maybe even make life long friends.  The next step would be to talk to the potential customer by telephone.  If you speak the same language of course.  If you are dealing with a company then checking that company out on the internet can be a good start.  What does their web site look like, does it look professional?  The internet can also be a place where people express their opinions, people sometimes are slow to spread good news but they love to spread bad news and tell other people how bad a company is.  Just look at CNN tonight see how much good news is on television,,, not much!

If people don't trust you, maybe its because you don't trust yourself.  If you trust yourself, then you will have confidence when dealing with your clients.  If you are buying something from someone and you get a bad feeling, then listen to that feeling and don't buy, likewise if you get a good feeling go ahead and trade.

Using local knowledge and people for your target customers is a good idea especially if you don't speak the same language, often communication is the major milestone with trust.  If you can get one client in a new country and get a good relationship with them, ask them if they would act as a reference for you!!
