We want to start importing from China either this year or next and this seemed to be the best forum to get advice from. What i want todo is get a good understanding of what is involved.

Currenlty we're requesting information from the suppliers i.e. cost, qtys etc. We plan to go over later this year to understand how the suppliers work and get the business relationship kicked off.

I'd like to know what steps do we need to take to make sure the goods can be sent from China to the UK in a safe and cost effective way?

There are three major parts to the import from China.


The first important step is to do your due diligence. There are goods which are copied rightly by the Chinese manufacturers, which trasp the Copy Right rules. There is no question about the quality or the reliability of the product, except that the brand name was stollen from somewhere else.


The second part is the payment. Most, if not all the Chinese suppliers insist on Advance payment 100% before manufacturing the product. I.e. pay-first-and-we-start making.

It will be a difficult pill for Western companies to swallow, but this has become more acceptable and even practiced by some Western companies.

If you are doubtful of the Chinese supplier, you can appoint inspectors to check on the authenticity, reliablity and integrity of the company.


The third and more important part is the after-sales service by the Chinese manufacturer. We have this problem: The first year since we started buying from a company in Shenzhen, their products were of good quality. We sent some to the lab here for verifications, and the readings were exceptionally good, some points even better than the specifications. But after our first year, and as our orders become bigger and more frequent, the Quality of the goods deteriorate. The test reports show them to be very good, with smaller margin of error than the tolerance. But our customer found them way out, some even not able to boot up. That leaves us doubtful of the genuiness of the report.


Their attitude is such:

Goods once sold cannot be returned. Should you return any goods on warranty claim, consignee shall not bear any freight cost, neither the import tax, whatever level it is.

The goods can only be reparied and return to customer by your own forwarder.

Well, i'm a student studying in china, but on many occasions, i have exported goods to my father's company in Nigeria . The most important thing is making sure that the goods u want with it's required specifcations are the ones the company is sending to you. It's not so difficult finding your product but getting the company to send the required quality is atimes difficult. At the moment, i'm starting a goods sevicing system whereby someone here could verify your goods before shipment. This i think is safer. Also, some people ask for permits to visit china to see their trade partner, this is good but much cost could be safed if a reliable person is on ground to oversee their transactions.
