Basic requirement for Import or Export.
Post 1 of 8

As in India to import or export one must have IEC (Import Export Code Number) either in company name or in personal name, issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (Ministry of Commerce and Industry). What is or are the basic requirements/ formalities (licensing or registration etc) in your respective country and the concerned authority. Is it possible to check the status of company online?

I met few people over here who claim to be in industry for 3 or more years and on verification found that they don’t even have completed such basic formalities.

Please give your input.

In the U.S. anyone can do import/export unless the products being imported or exported are regulated and or need specific letters from the brand to be sold abroad or imported.

Validity of business registration can only be done via each States, Secretary of State Office - Department of Corporations.  It can also be verified by subscribing to a commercial credit reporting agency and is your only real telltale sign that they are actively in buisness.  Conversely, you also seek and filings under the Department of Corporations UCC.  Besides this fact, an actual visit to the location by your self or an agent representing your interests.

The situation in Australia is somewhat similar to the US.

Anyone can import product without an import licence, but the importer may require an import permit for certain controlled or restricted products.

You do not need to register a business name in Australia if you trade under your actual name e.g John Smith.

You also do not need to register as a business if your income from that business is below a certain amount.

Generally speaking though a legitimate customer from Australia would have a registered business name and an Australian Business Number (ABN). If the customer has both of those things then you know that they are set up as a business but it does not tell you whether or not they are a reputable company.

In Australia there are both state and federal authorities that you can contact for information about businesses but the department you need to contact would depend upon the type of information you want. Perhaps an easy place to start would be with the relevant state Fair Trading authority.

Thanks for posting.

Information provided by you both, Ranger and Egernia, is really helpful. Thanks again.

Over here in

a person or firm can be traced or verified (in term ofexistence and also can know if still working or not and for how many years)through either IEC (Import Export Code) or PAN (Permanent Accnt Number). PAN is used to file income tax return, alsorequiredtoget IEC and opening a account with bank.

Is there anything similar to PAN in your respective state?

Thanks

I think that the equivalent in Australia would be the ABN that I referred to earlier which all business must have for tax purposes, and an ACN that registered companies must have for tax purposes.

The ABN and ACN are essentially the same thing they just denote the organizational structure of the business. B for business, and C for company.
