Hi. I am a first time buyer from MA. I am planning to purchase 500 units (min.) of a consumer product that will be shipped via DHL. The toal cost is around $2500 USD. The company is a gold supplier.
I asked if they take Visa or Paypal and I was told no. They take Western Union and Wire transfers only. My friends have advised that if I pay first and then no product is shipped, I am out of luck with no recourse. Please advise.
Yes, only T/T and Western Union. If you quantity is large, you can use L/c.

If you do business in this way ,you may get loss. i dont mean everybody want to cheat you ,but you pay for the order by wire transfer the producer may give you bad product and you cant get good ones instead. you can try another way .also you can ask some person who is reliable to check the goods for .
good luck for you

Ofcourse we should be very cautious in doing business, especially when cooperate with someone for the first time. However please donot be so extreme in distinguishing if it's a real supplier or not by this way.
We are also specialized in exporting consumer electronics. Often the payment term is telegraphic transfer also. We will take 30% deposit first and balance paid before delivery. We will inform all the updated news of production to our clients and send photo for confirm.
So you could send some deposit first and follow with all the production. You may ask for their trade reference and find the answer after checking that.
Just for reference, and hope it could help a little.
P.S: we are manufacturer of USB flash drive, MP3/4 players and memory cards... If anyone be interested please contact me directly by email hld at hilid dot com.
Thanks to everyone and wish prosperious business.

Never ever ever send money by those two routes your supplier has asked for . If you have a DHL prepaid account then the supplier if genuine should accept that his payment is safe. Your money too is safe and will not be released to the supplier unless the goods have arrived at your doorstep.
If the value is more then have a third party verification done and if the member is a true pass ofr Gold supplier do a background check and only then send it but no Western Union. DO A BACKGROUND CHECK ALWAYS NEVER BE IN A HURRY . CHECK AND ALSO DO NOT DEPOSIT tt INTO PERSONAL ACCOUNTS
The next alternate to open an LC irrevocable on sight if need be for the supplier again is assured payment once the good are at your sight.
If the supplier is a genuine manufacturer he will comply with your request if not search for another manufacturer.

Many what if scenarios. Buyer beware:) You must take into account shipping costs, and product damage prior to or during shipment. Insurance must be purchased and if the packaging is not damaged chances are it was defective prior to packaging. I would pay for a sample product to insure quality before a minimum quanity purchase. Short of that you must get US based references who have purchased from the specific individual you are dealing with. e-mail me and I can run a database search which covers most individuals and businesses in the United States. If you wish to establish a long term relationship it is time to invest in a trip to visit the seller which is a tax deduction and is the best insurance you can purchase. Your friends are right - once you send payment your money is gone and all you can do is hope that you get what you paid for.
If you are trying to buy foreign brand name products then you may as well give up now as they are not available to you from China and any seller that suggests otherwise is going to take your money and run.
Credit card and paypal are no protection when doing business in Asia.
Your best bet is to verify the supplier first by ensuring that you contact them both on their landline phone number and at their street address by sending them some information by post that they will only know if they receive that letter at their address.
Then make sure that you have the goods inspected before you make final payment. Once the goods leave China you are on your own.
