Practical difference between CPT and CNF?

I understand the definitions of the above terms:


CPT - Carriage Paid To

CNF - Cost and Freight


However I'm wondering if there is any practical (real world) difference between the two when ocean shipping a full container.

Hey Rizzo, there's a really big difference ol mate.

First let's get rid of this common "CNF" thing ... there is no such Incoterm ... the only Incoterm for Cost + Freight is "CFR".
 
CFR
 
Delivery of the goods from seller to buyer occurs when the goods swing over the ship's rail in the port of destination. Seller of course pays all costs and is liable to all risks up to only that moment in time. The term applies only for sea or inland waters.
 
CPT
 
CPT should be used when you don't intend to deliver across the ship's rail.
 
It means "Carriage Paid to ..." (a named destination which might be your doorstep). 
 
Under CPT the seller pays all costs to the named destination. The seller of course names the carrier/s.
 
The word "Carriage" in CPT refers to any combination of many different sorts of transport like sea, air or land.
 
One little quirk - if there is more than one carrier, the risk (as distinct from cost of freight) p to the buyer when the goods are delivered to the first carrier.

I remember the only difference between CPT & CNF is the manner of transportation. CPT used for all kinds of transportation, while the transit of goods under CNF condition is by sea.

You all amost answer the question completely right, but you miss one thing principal, thatthe risk of the seller stop on the board of ship on the port of loading!whether there's FOB, CNF, CIF. and

the risk of the seller stop on the board of any transport or place in the place of departure!  for CPT, CIP.

The main different between CNF and CPT only on the model of transport. CNF = for sea/water way tansport only and CPT for multimodal transport.
