Need help getting started with importing!

I hope one of you seasoned veterans will give me a few words of wisdom. I have been in business for over 25 years but have never imported items directly from a foreign manufacturer. I am embarking on a new business importing various tote bags and shopping bags from China. I have narrowed my choice of suppliers and will now send them samples to receive final pricing. How do I ensure that I have chosen a reputable supplier?

Forgive me for sounding naive, but what happens next? How do I arrange for shipping and what additional costs will I incur (port charges, etc?) Any additional information you can give me would be appreciated. Please let me know how I can learn more about the import process before I make any big mistakes.

Thanks for helping.

My suggestion would be start from small quantity.

(If you send me the details of the bag, I can give you price idea for small quantity.)

Then talk to a courier company that you are familiar with. The sales manager of UPS in HK always provide very useful information to me. I believe they will give you a breakdown of all costs for importing tote. If you know a shipping company, you can also ask them for the idea of importing costs. Then compare (when quantity is small)

(I can suggest you couple shipping companies that I alot with. Contact me through TM)

And I think it helps to let your courier or shipping company know the HS code. For tote bag, it is 4202 92 XXXX the last 4 digit is depends on the type of the material. One thing for sure is quota is not required.

    Hope above information help.

I think that you should use your own due deligence with your suppliers. Also, You shouldn't start with high quantities and don'e make a big order till a long time p and you make 100 percent sure that your supplier is reliable. Also, After you make up your mind to get the product from a certain company , you ask about this company in the forums and whether anyone got products from the same company. Moreover , you ask similar traders in the same field where they get their products from China .Finally , Your custom broker and shipping company and chinese moderators and friends can lead you to the correct way . Good luck

One of the keys to success is ensuring that both you and the supplier understand very clearly each others requirements.

One way to do this is to ensure that you obtain quality samples from your chosen supplier and then send a signed confirmation sample back to that supplier so that your inspection agent can confirm the quality of the production prior to releasing the shipment.

The fact is that once the production leaves China then it is next to impossible to rectify problems or get your money back.
