In addition to listening to the English radio and watching English TV, you can listen to songs being sung in English, watch English DVDs and befriend someone who speaks English well, to have a weekly conversation with. (The good thing about finding to someone who you can speak with is that the conversation will be interactive.)

Maybe your real problem is to have regular opportunity to speak English, as the sounds used when speaking English would be different from the sounds used to speak your home language. With practice your confidence would grow.

All the best

What if you can find a foreigner to talk to?

Here is something you can do. Listens to english songs and try to sing with them. It will help you with your pronunciation and you will also learn a lot of vocabularies, grammars and sentence structures.

The main problem with Chinese student when they are learning English is

1) They tend to depend on their books.  When the book is taken away, they immediately forgot what is in there.

2) They spend too much time learning vocabularies. Some students tend to try too hard by trying to remember 100 vocabularies a day. That is one big mistake.  We know that 100 vocabs a day will give you 3000 a month but when they go for  their  holiday the vocabularies goes along  with them and never come back again after the holidays.

3) Chinese students depended too much on Chinese language to learn English. This is again all wrong.

4) Some say try speaking out loudly. Fair enough, it may be good but what if you get the pronunciation wrong? You will be speaking or saying something foreigners may not understand.

When you are learning a foreign language you got to put away your native language aside.

Ask yourself this question. How is it that a little child can speak their native language when they cannot read and write?

Answer: Listen and follow. (Like they saying goes; monkey see monkey do)

Here is a simple way of doing it. Listen to English songs. Songs that are easy to listen to.

Try to sing along with the song and don't look at the lyrics (words of the song)

Sing along until you think you have got every words right. Then try to write them down. After that, you can go online to search for the lyrics and see if you got them right.

Here are a few links to some songs. They may be very old songs but it will help you with your listening.

Ahh practice makes perfect. I hear a lot of people say they watch TV and listen to songs which help a lot. But nothing make more sense than talking to a native english speaker. I find lots of Chinese suppliers write good english but have more problem understanding it when spoken.

Yes your contacts will understand that you need to be spoken to slowly...do not be afraid to say "I don't understand" nodding and saying "yes" all the time can be very dangerous. I've had suppliers do that and the results can be very bad! I speak very little Chinese so I very much appreciate when my suppliers speak English. I can be very patient with them if they are polite and respectful.

So all said, you need to do it face to face and have the English (American?) speaker help you. E-mails are great but don't really handle pronounciation!

Good luck,

Tim
