We are a Free Member in Alibaba too.
So far we have closed number of deals with a few Alibaba sellers. We have not met any problem during the dealing process. May be because we are buyer, we make our payment first before the goods is shipped
But if you are a seller with Free Member status, you may have difficulty in getting buyer. This is because of trust and confident level.

Yups free member can easily do business on Alibaba,
I use too deal in Marble and Onyx flooring tiles, slabs and Handi Crafts, from Pakistan, I am a free member of alibaba, I been three months working with alibaba... I got excellent buyers through alibaba on Free member platform... and daily buyers are coordinating with me...
Remember if you are a genune business men, you should know how to make deals with straingers, by securing your and others intrest...
I am very satisfied with alibaba, and soon going to be paid member...
