You are right, handloom industry is under crisis worldwide. But in India handloom industry still survive and share the cotton/silk cloth production.Be optimistic of handloom. It looks sometimes diminishing and sometimes growing and glowing. Its history is thousand and thousand years old.We are manufacturing BANARASI SAREES on handloom with the same oldest trends and style.Same KATAN/CHUTKI of pure malboury silk are used now. Same classical kerry and flower of MUGHAL ART are no doubt charm of these BANARASI SAREES. Its boarder, Anchal and eye catching choli/blouse are incredible.Modern technology fails where we start our smallest jaquard and five fingers to make a live rose bud.Jeans, jacket, trousers, shalwar sameez and fashionable wears could not replace this oldest classical BANARASI SILK SAREE.Even duplicate BANARASI SAREES are treated with great respect and wore by Indian ladies on special ocassions.Pure silk sarees either BANARASI or BENGLORI are like a boon ,kept with great care in safe box by the ladies of rich families. We witness, where is Indian sub continent lady, there is HANDLOOM SAREE.

HANDLOOM made cloth access and touches each corner of our civilized world. It is natural, pure and non toxic. It is old and everyone knows OLD IS GOLD.

Replying to [curdrice]: Regarding observations on handloom costs, i wish to express my views on the subject. Yes the handloom products do at times cost more, but that is if you take into consideration the production time viz a viz the delivery period. But i do differ on the actual cost of manufacturing, especially in Indian cities where the handloom sector is primarily in the unorganised sector, we have looms here which are run by the entire family, including the ladies of the house.

Hence as no electricity is consumed by the machines, there are no labour laws prevalent, no provident funds or minimum wages which have to be adhered to and on top of all this the production is all on piece rate basis, the cost in terms of the item, could be anything from a bed cover to a stole or a carpet is bare minimum, however the drawback is the production / delivery period as that is very slow and for some one to export his handloom product, one cannot relay on this slow production, hence we try to get a little bit or organisation into these production systems where in we ADD cost to the manufacturing process, thus making it expensive.

As a few of the fabrics can only be made on handloom, due to the nature of a few yarns (tensile strength etc) and also the end feel and or specifications, hence handloom as compared to power looms have the fabric made to completely two different feel and finish.

Hope you will find the above in order

With warm regards

Replying to [curdrice]:Acctually, nowadays Handloom fabrics are very popular in big cities in China, and traditional chinese Handloom fabrics are very good for health. We can say it is green product, because when produce it only needs man hand and cotton and the handloom. But the process is very long , and only old women know how to make it, and young girls don't want to learn it any more. So there do need someone to find those skillful people together and may be found the factory.
