The 23-year-old American has put the swimming world under his feet. With 11 Olympic gold medals, he is the most decorated Olympian in the world.
I think I am at a loss for words. Now I am the most decorated Olympian of all time. I have nothing to say and I am speechless," said Michael Phelps after capturing the gold medal in the 4X200 meters freestyle relay at the Beijing Olympic Games on Wednesday.
The American quartet of Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Ricky Berens and Peter Vanderkaay beat their own world record by 4.68 seconds to clock six minutes and 58.56 seconds.
Less than one hour before, in the 200m butterfly, his goggle was broken and was filled with water, but he still managed to win with a new world record at one minute and 52.03 seconds.
With this two new Olympic titles, the 23-year-old lanky American has become the most decorated Olympian of all time: five golds in Beijing, 11 Olympic golds altogether, and over halfway to his march to break the seven-gold mark set by his predecessor Mark Spitz in 1972.
Phelps had won three golds before Wednesday, equaling the nine-Olympic-gold record shared by U.S. swimming great Mark Spitz, American track and field star Carl Lewis, former Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina and Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi.
"I am just thinking that I am the greatest Olympian of all time. It's pretty great title," he said.
