How to improve oral English
Post 1 of 10

[em8] Dear friends:

Although  I graduated from English Department, my verbal English is so bad that I dare not open my mouth in face of foreigners. I have ever been trying to overcome my flaw of this, but the ultimate result is so disappointing. Now, I am stranded in extreme fear, and I do not the way in front of mine. Who can help me and teach me how to go out of the negative and passive situation? Thanks in advance

1) If you want to talk English, from now start to thinking in English too.

2) talk with your colleague English.

3) go to Skype and take with people there, be sure lots of people don't have job waiting for you there.[em1]

4) self confidence.

Yes, practice is very important.

Maybe you can start to read some articles, read them loudly! First you can practice by yourself, and then try to speak with your roommates in English.

Don't be shy, don't afraid to make mistakes! Just try to speak out, full of confidence.

Like the teacher of LiYang saying, "lose your face", trust yourself, you will feel better!!

[em1] come on!

  • use podcast.
  • speak in the environment
  • build up your vocab
  • read the dictionary, sleep with it and dream about it
  • listen to the ipod English speaking dialogue
  • Speak to people in your circle, your friends who will not laugh at you, but are also willing to learn.
  • Write a diary on your progress, and take down new words, check the dictionary.

Actually, we all make mistakes when speaking, even our native language. The only people who don't make mistakes are the ones that don't try. So, just apologise for your accent (if you feel it's necessary) and talk. Some people may laugh at you, but how important is their opinion? Also, Skype and all other messengers are a great way to improve your use of oral speaking. Just don't be afraid. [em19]

I like all the above replies. But in my opinion, you don't need to force yourself to do something you don't like, otherwise it makes you embarrassed and you will lose confidence. You can not speak english well, one important reason is that in most situation you don't need to speak english, you lack  English environment. Suppose that you are living or working in a place where all the people don't speak your native language, what do you do then? Don't worry about oral English, this is not a problem, time can change many things. The most important thing you should do at present is accumulating English knowledge for the sake of using in the future.

yeah , i quite agree with  you, our Chinese people always meet  this situation, but i  think  the most important thing is that we are very shy , and afraid to make some mistakes , especaily  in front of  the foreigners. in fact ,  this is  the very serious problem to you . so pls do remember it , don't be shy  ,  just have a try  and  just like LI YANG said  " LOVE TO  LOSE  FACE " ,then practice more, you will get progress day by day, trust me , you will  make it .  looking for your good news,[em1]
