Hi,

I am setting up an online web site for retail, as well as selling on eBay, and at flea markets. I am a little bit confused as to the customs regulations on different items I am thinking about selling. In doing several searches online I have found a few things I want to try and sell. Not all of what I am looking at importing is on this site Alibaba.

What I have found on this site is some fleece blankets made of polyester material. I would like to find somehow to get a nice assortment of fleece blankets ranging in sizes from twin size to king size. I prefer animal prints, I would love to get several different prints. Ranging from exotic birds, domestic cats, domistic dog's, dragon, ect. One in paticular that I can't find is one that has Shelite's on it. If I were to send a picture would someone be able to design one for me? Also I notice on one site they could put my label on them. Do you know how I would go about doing that?

Also I need all kinds of help figuring out how to import and figuring out the costs once it hit's the US. Is this going to break me trying to import the items I am looking at? Like i mentioned earlier I have been looking everywhere. I found some jewelry on another site and was wondering about importing on that too.

Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Shirley

Shirley, in my opinion the consideration to import product from another country such as the products you are looking to buy should be based upon quantities.

I am sure that the correct supplier can offer you all of the designs you want but you need to understand that in return they will likely want order sizes of hundreds if not thousands of pieces of each item in each color.

If you can find a supplier that has a current range of products that you are happy with then you may be able to talk down their minimum quantities, but if you are looking for anything less than 100pcs per item I think you may be disappointed by the response you get.

The cheap prices that manufacturers offer are generally based upon low profits on high quantities which equals big profits. If you are going to get into import then you need to work on the same model and just scale that down to the level that you are comfortable operating at.

Egernia, brings up some good points so I will address myself to the importing of the products you want to import.  Since these products are textile related there will be a duty applied to them.  The range is 9.9% - 14.9% and may be subject to an additional tax based on weight of the actual products or piece count tax.  Articles considered to be textiles cant enter the U.S. under the $2000.00 rule.  This means by example:
  • Product Desc    HTS 5407.61.21  (used as example only)
  • Product price    $1800.00
  • Pieces                    900
  • Weight                    409.9 KG
  • Shipping               $600.00
  • Insurance               $85.00

The above will be found on the Commercial Invoice.  The Customs Broker you use will use the above information to figure your duty and tax.

The duty is Product Price + Shipping + Insurance.   (Known as CIF)  the total being $2485.00

The duty based on theHTS classification would be $280.81 + the ad valorem weight tax of

409.9 x .122 cents per KG = $49.90  Your duty and tax would be $331.71

Knowing what your total costs are before you buy the products is necessary to know if you can actually compete in the market place and be successful.  You may be in Texas, but if your goods arrive in Houston and need to be transported to you in say Temple, TX you will have the added cost of forwarding the goods to you there as well.

Below you will find a checklist and explanation of sorts from U.S. Customs explaining how Duty is asessed and also the documents you must have prior to gaining entry into the U.S.  This is a reference for you.  You should contact a licensed U.S. Customs broker to make entry for you until you understand the process.

Hi Shirly

This is Nawal from Sterling/VA USA.

To answer your questions about imports:-

1-There is much expenses involved in importing but THERE are Chinese exporters who would ask for low qty for merchandise so I would sugest you put this condition when you contact them, however, I have no experience in importing myself.

2-Don't fall for those who are offering to buy their ' How to import" manuals they may be out of date or merely info you can directly obtain from government agencies or from the net.  That does not mean some may have some good ones but in my experience some are selling just crap over the net.

3 You can e-mail me at      enprofit2@yahoo.com for more advices on this.

Dear Shirley

We are jewelry and gemstone sellers and are catering to 200+ store owners/shop owners/re-sellers based in the USA. We are also powersellers on ebay. As far as jewelry & gems is concerned, you would not have to pay any taxes. Except if its gold/diamond jewels which are sent by shipment mode. In that case you would have to pay 6% duty I think.

I guess though your orders would be around US $ 1000-3000 range as you are looking for variety. In that case it should not be a problem.

Do have a look at my items for offer. I guarantee if you try mine, you can sell at 3-5 times in USA, guaranteed! My personal Guarantee.  By my Items, I mean both Gems and Jewels.
